Identifying a Superbird without a fender tag

The back glass is recessed and has sail panels
 
first dead giveaway is that in 70 a roadrunner only had a 440 when it was a six pack so it would read RM23V0..... so if the car your looking is RM23U0 thats a 440 4 barrel and likely not a regular road runner ......if the car your looking at is a V-code or Hemi then it could be either one, then you look at the back window ...a superbird had the flush back window ....and it will have wing support structure in the trunk

and it goes without saying ...if its a 383 no chance its a superbird.... RM23N0 is a regular road runner
 
Superbirds had chrome wind deflectors on the a pillar..
Superbirds were all vinyl top cars
Superbirds have a diamond shaped filler piece bottom side of the rear window
 
Also...Power steering, front power disc brakes and hood pins were required factory equipment on all SuperBirds...and don't forget the fender scoops.
 
Thanks, the car has a 440 six pak with the rear wing and nose cone. The fender tag is missing and the car has been out of service for so long it's out of the DMV system. It was taken apart to rebuild and the owner has lost interest. What do you think the value of the car is without the fender tag?

No clue, would need pictures and proof its real. Is there a build sheet? How about the VIN?
 
Vin is there I haven't looked into decoding it yet because we are just starting to talk but I was concerned about the absence of the fender tag

have any pics? My friend sold his at peak market for 75k it was all apart, baged and taged. numbers matching with fender tag. my 2 cents

The diamond shaped piece at the rear window is a filler extension to complete the rear window plug, as can be plainly seen on the car pictured by Tony. This is the biggest telltale sign of a Superbird, as the rear window was made smaller to accomodate the wing/trunklid configuration. You can clearly see the plug, which was very hastily tacked in and then hurriedly covered by the vinyl top. Most times you will find maybe as little as 4 tack welds holding in the plug, and absolutely no body filler to transition the plug to the body. Very shoddy craftsmanship to get the cars out!! Geof
 
Thanks Geof, under that vinyl looks horrible! Looks like the rear roof line was extended and like you said very poor craftsmanship
 
Isn't that the same car that was in the "Mopar or No Car" movie? My son watches it all the time and I'm pretty sure that's the one the guy talks about using it to pace the dirt track races back home. Crazy looking dude with a sweet mullet and a helmet on while driving it.

never noticed that before (tbh, never paid much attention to the 'wing' cars because I'm not really a fan, and I've never looked that closely at the one that runs around town occasionally) but that looks terrible (and, I mean, even when it looks good I bet it looks bad).
The rear window, straight from the back, just looks... bad.

...but I'll take one if someone gives me one lol
 
got to be real, it's too much of a mess...
the rear window plug was also used on the 69' charger 500 that they built for nascar. also the holes in the A-pillars are for the deflectors.

gonna need alot of work. hope you can save it...
 
42 year old car looks original, might look rough, but looks like a straight mostly complete car, you see what you get

If it was a totally restored car, you would have no idea what it looked like

The window plug, SS trim on A Pillar were to help cheat the wind

They were built to meet NASCAR requirements to race them, they didn't build collector cars.

Will be expensive to restore, super birds do not bring the money they once did, but neither do many of the muscle collectible cars do since the economy crash, will it come back?

Wish I had a crystal ball
 
Love to get my hands on that because I wouldn't have to pay to have it restored just some serious time and sheet metal. They use to fetch 135k and up but now are 85 to 100 for a real nice one. Still if you could get one cheap enough in rough order you could justify your investment if it wasn't a total rust bucket.
