That looks awesome. I think the difference is that the cars driven in Australia at the time were basically chosen by the drivers at the dealership and driven to the track and raced. There were very few private racers as most drivers were dealer or factory sponsored but all cars driven in the races were basically showroom models.
My favourite humble little Valiant Charger put out 302bhp in 1972 with a six cylinder.
Of course Fords Falcon XY GTHO made around 450 even though they rated it at 350.
The Valiant Charger was actually designed and made with a budget of $2 million in 18 months and had very little funds for racing. Go the Charger!!!!!!!!!!!

Yeah I saw a bit on the Nc historic but they had that big crash with the Mustang and cancelled the Mount Panorama race. You can see many of these cars live. For example I have had my head inside both the Cuda and Challenger shown in those videos.

The cars are awesome to watch racing. These events are well organized but informal. You can walk around the paddock, look at the cars, talk to the drivers and owners.

In that first video, at around 4:06 and just after 6:00 min there area some serious tire liftin' corners! Bad Azz!
 
T/A racing was never mopars forte. The chally's and cuda's were just too fat compared to the competition..why they didnt go racing in the lighter A is beyond me...

I've talked to Bob Tarozzi who was the Chrysler engineer that coordinated the Trans Am effort and was team manager for AAR.

The Cuda and Challenger did qualify well. The Cuda had some poles. It was just their first year with a new car. They got a real late start on the season and by mid way Chrysler cut the budget on both teams. And they didn't have the budget that the other teams did to start with anyone. They broke a lot of parts early on.

The AMC guys started in 1968 and didnt win until 1970. And that didn't happen until they got Penske and Donahue.

Bob Tullius did well the first few years of T/A driving a Dart with out factory suport.

At first, the Trans-Am vehicles were primarily modified versions of the road-going car. The competition was divided into two classes- an "Under 2 Liter" class (predominantly small European sedans) and the "Over 2 Liters" class (displacement limited to 5.0 liters, or 302 cu. in. ).
The first race was in 1966 at Sebring International Raceway. The overall win went to Jochen Rindt driving an Alfa Romeo GTA (an Under 2 Liter entry), with Bob Tullius (driving a Dodge Dart) taking second overall, but first in the Over 2 Liter class.
 
Thanks for the info on the history! Mopars winning 1/4 mile records started the second the hemi was in thier cars,lol, but it was too heavy for t/a racing.

I guess the Dart didnt fit with the pony car image?

I think for the factory it is all about selling cars. The A bodies always sold well and they were pushing the new E bodies.
 
Yeah in the first vid, the little car lifting tires round the corner was a Holden (GM Australia) Torana. Nippy little 6 cyl.

The Charger (my car) was fitted with the awesome Hemi 265 and 3 dual throat 45mm webbers (straight off the showroom floor usually) and pumped out a respectable 302bhp.
0-60 in 6.1
Pretty good for a six in '72!
