i was smelling gas inside my subaru and my mechanic found a leak at the passenger side fuel dampener. he goes to order it, but the part is on national back order for a month, so he temporarily replaced it with a small, high pressure hose.
he said my check engine light might come on, but only worry if it starts flashing OR if i start smelling the gas again. a test drive today has produced neither, but i ask you: is it safe to drive or should i rent/borrow a car for a month?

I know nothing about Subaru's other then a short term girlfriend bought one in 1984......:D. Seriously, if you smell no fuel, maybe they knew what the're taking about?..... With that said, i wouldn't park it in my garage or anywhere near my house or a building until i was sure there was no possibility of leaking gas........It would really suck to pay for a rental for a month if you didn't have to.

good advice about keeping it out of the garage....
i DO trust my mechanic, i just know he doesn't work on subarus that often.
it's also crazy that the part is on back order for a month...what do dealerships do in tht situation?

thanks for the input.

When i was selling parts at GM dealers, we would search other local dealers in the attempt to find one. There is the possibility that this part is being superceded to a upgraded part and on occasion that can lead to a healthy delay. I once needed a flywheel for a warranty job and they would only pay for the "new" number. Had the first # on the shelf, but it was a no go to GM and the truck sat for 3 1/2 weeks. :violent1:. These things just happen sometimes.
