While attempting to figure out the RPM-related vibration in my '71 318/904 Dart, I found this on the starter ring. I can't tell if it is a crack, or if its just the way it was built. Aren't these usually seamless one-piece rings?

(Sorry about the fuzzy pic, phone in one hand, work light in the other....)

Not good! Not enough to cause vibration yet, but will only get worse over time. Real chance of causing some unpleasant damage if not taken care of.

It's cracked. I don't know how all these "experts" say it cannot cause a vibration. What do you think is happening to the ring gear as the engine spins? Think about it.

I'd pull it apart sooner rather than later.

First it could be the cause of the vibration.

Second, if it comes apart it could be catastrophic, as in s%$t coming through the floor or fatal damage to your transmission.

Personally, I don't think I'd even drive the car until I pulled the motor or trans and investigated. Your safety is paramount.

Stroker Scamp- if you'll bother to notice, most of us "experts" said not enough to cause vibration YET.
