So, if I am doing a cam change and want to stick these new roller rockers on at the same time, how do I set the lash or preload initially for cam break-in since the lifters have no oil in them yet? The setting will change once they have been run thru the break in procedure, right? Is there a way to set them or do I have to assemble the old rockers to break the cam in, then take it back apart to put the new rockers on? I don't want to blow the break in, or mess up my rockers and new rods.#-o

Roller lifters of any sort mean you dont have a cam break in. The preload or lash should not change by any significant amount. That's why the roller is there...

Put everything together with the new rockers and use a priming rod to prime the engine with oil...this will pump up the lifters and allow you to set the lash better.

You said hydraulic roller, and adjustble pushrods..right? You dont need oil for hydraulic lifters. You do need the rockers you plan to end up with. I do it with the intake off (before it's permanently attached) Install the pushrods and rocker sahfts just like they should be. slowly and evenly tighten the shaft hold downs. Don't start at one end and go, or simply tighten the center then move out. Make sure they all are in place properly, that the springs and spacers are right, and that the pushrods are on the adjusters, with the adjusters backed off all the way. I use a little white grease on the cups to hold the rockers on the pushrods. In any case, you start with whatever cylinder is on TDC, both valves closed (should be one if this is a new engine). check lifter preload on #1, and set it. I dont like using the "go 'til there's no play, then 1/2 turn" because it's so dependant on feel, and if you're new at it, you have none. SO, look at the lifter. If you can, get a set of wire feeler gages. You want somewhere between .005 and .040" preload, depending on the lifter type. You cam card should tell you what lifters you needed to run. Anti Pump ups will want less preload. When #1 is set, look at the lifters for #8. Turn the engine so it gets to TDC on compression, and both valves are closed. Then do the same. I go in the firing order that way. 1 8 4 3 6 5 7 2. That's how I do them...

Sorry if I wasn't clear, I mean hydraulic flat tappet and adjustable roller rockers. Hey, dusterb318, you have a pretty good combo I hear, what are you running in that duster? I saw your car in a magazine a while back, I would like to know how you got 11 seconds, and if the car is streetable the way you have it? Everyone asks me why don't I just get a 360 and use off the shelf parts to reach my goal, and I say 'cause I have a 318...DUH!' and where's the challenge in doing it the easier softer way? I want a 350 hp 318 that I can use every day!!

Thanks.....it sees 11's because of a 150 shot of laughing gas. I run pump 93 and can drive the car anyway. It is very streetable.
