You said hydraulic roller, and adjustble pushrods..right? You dont need oil for hydraulic lifters. You do need the rockers you plan to end up with. I do it with the intake off (before it's permanently attached) Install the pushrods and rocker sahfts just like they should be. slowly and evenly tighten the shaft hold downs. Don't start at one end and go, or simply tighten the center then move out. Make sure they all are in place properly, that the springs and spacers are right, and that the pushrods are on the adjusters, with the adjusters backed off all the way. I use a little white grease on the cups to hold the rockers on the pushrods. In any case, you start with whatever cylinder is on TDC, both valves closed (should be one if this is a new engine). check lifter preload on #1, and set it. I dont like using the "go 'til there's no play, then 1/2 turn" because it's so dependant on feel, and if you're new at it, you have none. SO, look at the lifter. If you can, get a set of wire feeler gages. You want somewhere between .005 and .040" preload, depending on the lifter type. You cam card should tell you what lifters you needed to run. Anti Pump ups will want less preload. When #1 is set, look at the lifters for #8. Turn the engine so it gets to TDC on compression, and both valves are closed. Then do the same. I go in the firing order that way. 1 8 4 3 6 5 7 2. That's how I do them...
