Hello everyone,
I've been looking for a 360 around the Southern California area for about a month now, and have had a few deals and promises fall through. Couldn't find anything worth while at the local pick-a-parts, and looking on craigslist I've found a few, but no one I contact has been returning emails or phone calls. So I figured I'd try here...
I'm in Colton, CA just south of San Bernardino, and just north of Riverside, about 10 minutes away from the Speedway in Fontana. I'm looking for a 360 in rebuildable condition, or maybe running (going to rebuild it anyway no matter what). The engine will be going into my '73 duster that up until three months ago was my daily driver to and from college. Also looking for a 727 Trans in roughly the same condition. If there's anyone in the area, from San Diego to Bakersfield area, or from the Mojave to the coast who's got an extra laying around, I'd like to know about it please, and try to work out some sort of deal.
Thanks guys!

There are a few out my way, they are long blocks and are in the 350-400 range. Guys are stupid about somewhat complete engines here.

I'm in Palm Springs area.

Why do you want a 727 behind a SB?

What do you mean "stupid about somewhat complete engines here"?
Also I'm leaning towards the 727 as that's what I'm familiar with (at least on the big block side of things) and I have many friends that have run both a 904 and a 727 and prefer the 727, it's been recommended to me more, about a 9-1 ratio on recommendations. Any suggestions as to why I wouldn't want a 727 behind a small block?
I'm very new to the small block game. It's only been big blocks and slant 6's for me. Never turned a wrench on a small block save for jump starting a friend's car, but that doesn't count as working on one.

I'm looking for a 727 because that's what many friends I've talked to have in their small block mopars and recommend. Only got one friend with a 904, and she's only got that because she doesn't want to get rid of the first thing she's ever rebuilt (and she's just gonna put that in the other car she's building as her "fun" car that its in now is getting a 727). Do you have any suggestions as to why I shouldn't go with a 727?
I'm very new to the small block side of things, never worked on one so far. It's been all big block and slant 6 for me to date, and the slant 6 in my Duster has to come out, firstly because it's broken secondly because I've never had a good experience with those things. So I'm trying to gather parts and knowledge.

The price is stupid in my opinion, but that's what they want.

A 727 is heavier and takes more power to run than a 904. Unless you plan on knocking 550+ hp through a trans, the 904 built right is more than capable. I never put a 727 behind a SB unless it's a resto car and it came with one.

Everyone has an opinion about the trans situation.

There will be a fairly priced '70 340 longblock in that area within the next day.
Or I can possibly pick up a 360 on the way in.

Mark.

crackedback, price stupid in what way? Too high? sounds like it to me, I'm finding complete engines fro that price, some with trans.
Mark Nixon, what is fairly priced on that 340? And more info please?

Crackedback is 100% right about the 727 vs the 904. You'll "see" more power at the rear wheels with the 904 and it will certainly hold up to any street application. I use a 904 in my 71 340 Demon NHRA stocker and would never again put a 727 in. The car would slow down.

I know you wanted to rebuild an engine but I have 360 long block already done. Just thought that I would let you know. I'm on the East coast but I have no problems with shipping. I can send more info and pics if you're interested.

physixx, that sounds like a viable option...except that shipping will kill my bank account, but thanks for the offer, and info on the trans stuff.

Shipping engines is always tough on the budget. I have a broker that I've been using for over 3 years and he gives me excellent rates. I shipped a complete engine to Oklahoma for under $300. Maybe we can work something out. You never know.

Oh hey man!!....I'm workin' over here in Ontario and I always hit that junkyard on Milliken.....I saw a bunch of 360's there in trucks and vans AND.....one of them I had my eye on was a '90 or '91, which I believe means it has the desireable "308" heads. I've been kinda lazy to go pull them. But yeah, I probably saw about 5~7 360 motors there about a week and a half ago. Go to the truck/van section.

cudavert, I was at that yard on tuesday, spent the whole day digging around, found two 360s that were siezed, and one that had a crack running down the side of the block, and then ran out of time and got chased out when they closed. They had a ton of transmissions, but I just didn't have any time/help to pull one. They also had a '73 Duster and a few '73 Chargers that they got all pissy at me for asking about because they were behind the fence. Pending what happens these next couple weeks I may go back for a second try

I had a 904 behind my small block for a while and went to the 727...it feels like I lost about 30 or 40 horsepower...will be going back to my 904 soon..plus the 727 is alot heavier...no comparison as far as I am concerned.

If you contact Leanna's (CudaChick1968) friend (Tyler) who ships freight, I am sure he can get you a smoking deal on transporting it for you. He moved a complete motor from OH to CA for me for $225.

Just found you a complete one that meets the parameters you set, both on condition and pricing.
It is from an '83, or so pickup and was running 2 a year ago, but is missing carb/air cleaner, but I acquired a car 360 pan that can go with it.

You have a PM.

Thank you everyone for your help and your offers and knowledge. A friend of mine found a 360 + 727 (trans built for race by B&M) when he went chasing a craigslist intake manifold. Managed to score both for $300, just a few minutes down the road from my house. Thank you again everyone!!!

Good that you got a decent deal.

Good thing I only wasted a few hours of my time.
Next time don't tell a guy the deal is done, then inform him you already found another deal, better or not.
Especially when it appeared no one cared to go out of the way to help you.

Mark.

if you can find someone to haul from Portland, OR to your area, I have a 360 that is in the car and running. Comp 274 cam, ported heads, air gap intake. If your interested, email me at [email protected]
