hey guys
I am running a 360 in my 66 barracuda and am trying to find out a good timing setup to run. The engine has a 218/224 cam, 670 cfm holley carb, RPM Air Gap intake and MSD 6AL box, with the stock distributor. Right now if my memory is correct my timing was right around 8 degrees. But trying to see if there is a better way to have it setup to max out my power. Thanks for your input
Kris

So far the stock heads and all I know about the cam is that its a 218/224 Competition cam. Bought the motor from a donor car that had the cam in it already

There's been tons written on this subject and posted on this board

Look for other posts, esp by people like crackedback

First, you should know what you "have."

Use a piston stop to determine if the timing marks are actually accurate

Research your cam and find out where (timing, "degrees") that it should be installed for best performance

Then play with timing AND TIMING CURVE

A "stock" distributor, especially ANY distributor made after 69-70 is going to have a "smog" curve from the factory, not the best.

You need to recurve it, (limit the mechanical advance) and use lighter advance springs

This is a VERY good article

FBO sells "limiter plates" that sandwich into the mechanical advance so you don't have to do any welding on the advance slots

Scroll down this page and look for the J685K Limiter Kit

Your last options are either to have your factory one recurved by someone who "does this".........

Or buy a complete aftermarket distributor which you can ADJUST the timing curve in, such as Accel, Mallory, MSD, etc

I would say start out at 16 degrees initial and work your way up 2 degrees at a time.

Im running a competition cam xe268h which is 1 grind above your 262. I have a 9.5 comp. 360 with a performer rpm and an avs 650 thunder with stock manifolds and I am at about 18-19 initial.
