Looking for PCM options

Last week I picked up a 5.7 Hemi/8HP70 drop out of a 2015 Dodge Charger. Supposed to have 60k miles on the engine/trans. I don't currently have a project car ready to drop this stuff into, but I would like to get it started/running on a stand.

I got the wiring harness with the engine, but no PCM. Looks like I can pick up a PCM from the wrecking yard for around $100, but I am not sure that will get me anywhere.

What is my best option to get a engine controller I can use to get this thing fired up?

I looked at hotwireauto, $550 for a user computer, sublimeparts, has an unlocked PCM for $450 (when available) or will unlock my computer for $300. Although I have emailed them multiple times and have gotten no response.

Or do I just break down and buy a Mopar crate kit for $1500. I cannot seem to find just the Mopar Crate PCM for sale without the rest of the kit.

I kind of want to try my hand at making the factory wiring run the engine, but I need a PCM to do this.

Any Suggestions?

Frankly if you have none, and want to go with a factory computer, I would find the best deal I can with someone such as hotwire. You need to decide if you are going to use a factory computer controlled auto, or stick or an earlier "non computer" auto

Not sure if the 8HP plug is part of the engine harness though. Nor what else you will need to make it work. Pretty sure Sound German Engineering has a setup to make them work with the factory PCM though.

Without the above kit you will need relays and such.

You still need the PCM though. I would buy the one from the yard and have Sublime do the Crate Motor tune on it.

I know you haven't had much success contacting them, but I know others have. You might try FB, I know he is on there.
 
I should add that a factory PCM for 2015 and later has logic for a start signal over the CANBus that can't just be turned off. The Crate Motor tune that Sublime does makes the PCM the same as the one that Mopar sells with their swap kit, and removes this. No idea if Hotwire can do the same thing, but I would bet they can. Either way, you will need to probably get this done somehow if you buy a used PCM.

By the time I buy a used ECM ($100) + sublime programing ($400), + sublime quick run harness ($900) = $1400

Mopar Hemi Crate kit with new wiring harness and ECM = $1447

Ends up being the same price.

The 8HP will be separate no matter which ECM I go with.
 
I completely understand. I struggle with spending a bunch of money on that stuff instead of using it for swap parts and such.

If you want to stick to the GPEC2A that matches your harness, you are stuck having to do something to remove the CANBus start option like having Sublime or Hotwire flash it. Then you could build your own power harness with the missing PCM plug, body harness plug, a PDC and wiring diagrams.

Another option would be to ditch the stock harness and retrofit an NGC setup. The cam and crank sensors have to be swapped but after that everything should plug in and work, as I understand it. You could even start with a harness from an older Hemi like an '08, but you would have to add the VVT wires and check the pinouts to make sure nothing moved around. And if you wanted to run a 6.4 intake, you could add the SRV plug as well. Note that the car NGC can't seem to make the SRV work, so you have to either run a truck NGC or an RPM window switch.

Note that there are some tuning issues to get it running with the NGC as well, but it's all stuff you could do with an HPTuner's setup if you wanted. Actual tuning is beyond my plans but I should be able to turn of SKIM and the start signal over the CANBus if I wanted to.

I looked at the differences between the NGC and GPEC2/A controllers when I was trying to pick a direction. The NGC is older and slower, but easier to deal with since it doesn't have need an SSR (Start Signal Replicator) or a crate motor flash. At the same time, the NGC can't control the radiator fans like the GPEC2A can. In the end, I decided to run the NGC for my swap.

If you were going to try and run the 8HP off the stock PCM (if it was even possible), you couldn't do the NGC controller. But if that is going to be separate anyways, you have the option open.

Sound German Automotive sells a kit to run the engine and the 8 speed transmission. It's been a few years sense I bought the kit, but I am pretty sure it came with a unlocked factory pcm..but you would have to get in touch with Russ and see. I got this info off there website.

Now supporting 8hp swaps with the FCA units only. We support swaps with factory take out ECMs, crate motor ECMs, and full standalone conversions. Factory FCA 8hp shifters from the Charger, Challenger or Ram must be used. TPS and RPM and brake switch are the minimum requirements.

Admittedly, Blake isn't always on top of his email.. you have to imagine all of the emails that he gets in a day that are potential customers or people with just a question, plus he's building everything. He's pretty close to being a 1 man show with help from his wife to create invoices etc., but has responded to every message that I've sent him through FB messenger... or phone call. One of the things that you will get with his goods is customization and support. Once it's established that you're a customer and not one of the hundreds that probably email and never buy, he's there for you. Sadly, that's just the way it is. He helped me with a few things on another swap, that wasn't using his parts. He's just a good guy that is just like the rest of us... loves Hemis and Mopar. Again.. messenger seems to work best.

I have 2 swaps... One with a Mopar Crate Harness and one that is purely sublime. The Sublime kit did come in cheaper but I also had the oem 6.4 harness on hand. So I paid $900 for the quick harness, $400 for the ecu but got $100 back for a ecu core return. As a bonus, I was able to have him program my fan on/offs as I wanted, bellcrank plug rather than pedal and something else in the ecu program that I can't remember right at the moment. All in, I was at 1200 bucks. A few wires to hook up, plug it in and done.

EDIT.. another perk for me, was that the Sublime kit has a provision for AC controls through the oem harness.

With the mopar crate harness, I didn't want to pay for an HP tuner and credits, just to change the fan settings.. So I ended up having to run a different relay setup for that. A nice feature was that it was complete. My 5.7 swap did not have a usable harness and the ecu was a 2014 (junk). Another thing that was disappointing about the MCH, is that I had to cut the loom open and lengthen and redirect the battery cable for the starter and the starter lead to the drivers side. The kit is designed around a manual transmission with a passenger side starter. Lastely... there is zero support for the MCH. If you have an issue or a question.. you're on your own bubby.

My 5.7 swap has an 8 speed.. bought the stand alone for it, directly from Sound German. Easy to hook up, with a few head scratchers. You have to add a few wires into the plug, depending on what options you want.. electronic speedo, reverse lights and a brake light trigger that you must have.. and I don't know why it's just not there, since you 100% need it on every application. I made a cheat sheet and chart that I would gladly share. Anyway, hook up a few wires, plug some stuff in and done. Both the sublime kit and the MCH have a "star" connector block that allows everything to communicate with each other.. so the trans knows what the motor is doing and visa versa. It all works amazingly well. With other kits (ie Hotwire), you'll have to tap into the tps yada yada to give that info to the trans.

Last I spoke with Blake, I believe he now has a complete harness as well.. Supposed to be longer, so you can put your ecu in the dash easily. With the oem harness that I have on my 6.4, I lengthened each wire (1 at a time) by 14" just so I could get it all to my glovebox area.

I recently picked up another SGA 8HP kit from Sublime (authorized Dealer) so I can replace my 904 with something more suitable.

Both kits are great. Good luck and I hope you're happy with whatever direction you go.

Thanks for all the good comparison info Dantra. I have been reading through your build thread on Butters, good stuff in there. I am on both of those Facebook pages, but I am not a real big fan of Facebook in general, I never can find anything back on there, and I get tired of the scrolling on the phone.

I agree.. Finding what you're after on FB can be a pain. Sometimes you can search within the group and find some stuff, but never exactly what you're looking for. So you ask a question and get so many different answers that lead to a new rabbit hole or two. I try to keep my threads here updated. My accomplishments and failures for others to see and use as they will. Good or bad, it's all data

I sent a link of this page to Blake .. He said o man, I need to respond to that. He used to frequent this site more often when he had his A body.. now has an E.
