I believe I have found my turn signal problem with my 65 Barracuda.
There are 2 little square plastic pieces with copper wrapped around them inside the switch. One of mine is broken beyond repair.

Does anyone have a couple of these things laying around and if so what would you want for them shipped to San Antonio, 78239?

Thanks!

Jim

I cant help you with any parts, but you can check with Laysons yearone and the other parts houses, what you need is a turn signal switch assembly, these are sold as a unit with pigtails ready to be soldered up to your existing wiring harness inside the column. Make sure the replacement part covers your year car, and looks the same as the original.

The pieces you describe are indeed the main wear parts in the turn signal switch. They're called the shuttles, and when they're worn out you really do need a new switch assembly. No soldering is necessary; a new turn signal switch comes with the wire harness already attached and all the terminals already installed on the ends of the wires. You'll be replacing the switch, wires and all, in one go.

The turn signal switch wires connect to the underdash wires with a snap-together nylon connector block. Separate its two halves, then remove the nylon connector block by releasing each individual wire from the block, one at a time. This is achieved by means of a terminal extractor pick (or, if you're in a hurry and don't want to spend money, a darning needle or unbent sturdy paper clip or mini screwdriver), inserted into the slot at the "front" (connector) end to depress the terminal's lock tab. Then a careful tug of the wire pulls it out the back of the connector block.

Draw yourself a diagram of which wire goes to which slot in the connector block, especially if you don't have a wiring diagram for the car (you can download one free of charge here).

Once you've released all the terminals from the block, tie a long piece of string or twine round the bundle of wires at the very end near the terminals. Withdraw the old switch, which will pull the string up the column. Untie it, tie it round the wire bundle on the new switch, then pull the string to guide the new wire bundle down the column without any of the wires snagging and refusing to show themselves at the bottom. Then just snap each wire into the nylon block in its correct position, plug the two halves of the connector together, reassemble the switch and lever, reinstall the steering wheel, and you're all set.

As for where to buy the switch: They're around; not impossible to get, but shop carefully. Interchange on that switch is '64-'66. The vendor with the name starting with "L" mentioned by another poster in this thread has reputation problems; see threads here, here, here, and here, for just a few of many examples. :-(

I just replaced the one in my 65 Dart convertible let me see I think I have on more switch I know i have a few of the for different years I'll check

Wow. Thanks for the information everyone!

I knew "L" had them and I trust Rick, I just don't want to give the owner my money until all other avenues have been exhausted.8)

Thanks for the links Dan and the really helpful information. I saved the schematics for my 66 Dart also. If Andy or someone else doesn't have one laying around you sure have me prepared for the swap.

If you have one Andy, it will really be a lifesaver. This is the only thing keeping me from taking this slant to the track!

The first Wednesday after I repair it I will be posting a time slip! :-D

After New Year's I've got a shipment of brand-new turn signal switches for '62-'63 and '64-'66 coming from an original Chrysler supplier (not made-in-china copycat switches) but I don't think you wanna wait til after New Year's!

Check with Old Car Parts Northwest at 206-300-1083; talk to Ray, tell him Dan Stern sent you, and ask if he has a turn signal switch number SM-102 or SM-106. If no luck there, call up Shee-Mar at 303-678-5334 and see if they have an SM-106 in stock. The SM-106 is slightly different from your original switch in the detail of the plastic mount plate, which will have to be shaved down slightly with a box knife to fit in your steering column. Once that's done, it'll fit and work.

Thanks Dan. I called and left a message with OCPN. Shee-mar had a 102 in stock and wants around $130 for it, but that is for the whole assembly.
I hate to get the whole thing when all I need is the little sliders..:angry7:

By the time the shuttles are worn out, the rest of the switch is worn out, too -- the stationary contacts will not make reliable contact even if you were able to get new shuttles (which you can't).

SM106 at Rockauto.com for 59 bucks brand new.. can't go wrong there.

Good advice on the replacement. I did 3 shuttles in my Truck the new ones just seem to where out the assembly even more, then its really really worn out to where the arm doesn't even stay up and you are always in a left turn.

Thanks a lot Rick!! That is a much better price!

Thanks to Dan I know that one will work if I shave it down a little. Neither of you recommended the new shuttle thing so I will just have to wait I guess.

Thanks again! :-D
