Hey Guys,

I just minitubbed my 71 scamp and am soon moving in the springs as well...I want to fit as wide a tire as i can in there and the next thing i want to do is to remove the lip that runs along the rear wheel openings...question is how do i do this? That lip is a seam of two pieces of metal so I am not sure what i should do....should i cut it, should i bend it, etc? If you guys have done this before please share how you did it and pictures would be great too.

Thanks alot:-D

You can roll it, a little rough without a fender roller tool from Eastwood. I used a cutoff wheel, taped up the lip and cut about 3/4 of it off. Go slow and be careful if the car is painted.

is there any other ways of doing this without needing to get the tool?

i just used a hammer and block on the outside. i got great results and just worked slowly. keep in mind i wasnt worried about my paint since its going to be redone soon anyway.

I have heard of the bending technique for it as well....is that the basic way of going about it, by using a hammer and block? My car is getting painted soon too so I am not worried about that either.....cutting it off though does seem like a cleaner all around method of doing it though....rjsjea did you have to weld the seam in that lip together once you had cut off the 3/4 peice all around?

Another method that's been around for over 30 years is to use a wooden baseball bat between the tire and the lip. Hold the bat against the tire and slowly roll the bat between the tire and the fender lip. I've heard of this method working with good success, but I can't vouch for it as I've never used it.

Watch any old Nascar race to see it employed. You stick the fat end of the bat at the back of the tire and the fender lip. You then slowly move the car forward while letting the bat roll along the fender lip. It may take a couple of passes but take your time.
How big a tire are you using?

hey guys thanks for the replies....I just finished doing it rite now....i used the hammer and block method to get it rolled right up flush with the quarter....it looks pretty good, just need to do some extra bodywork over the rear lip area where the dolly was before i get it painted
