Hey guys, getting ready to swap a stock Magnum serpentine setup into a 65 Dart and I was curious how the stock alternator is being regulated on a 5.2/5.9 from a mid 90s dodge ram. Would it still be externally regulated like the old cars?
Yes. If you are keeping your old style regulator, ground either brush and run the green wire in the car to the other brush.
Would be better to convert to a 70/ later regulator, if only because they are more available. Only add one more wire. Run a wire from the switched IGN12v at the ballast down to one brush, connect the existing green wire to the other. Two wire up at the old VR connect to the new regulator. MAKE SURE in either case the VR IS GROUNDED
