I could sure use a picture of how to measure the centrifugal advance on my Mallory YH by using the red plastic sticks they give you in the Summit spring assortment kit, because I'm not sure I'm doing it right. I've searched the 'net, including the posts and tutorials on this site, but haven't found a picture yet. I know it's probably obvious, but then again I'm not too smart.

Anybody?

I hope I can explain this without pictures.

When you look at the sticks or keys, you’ll see they are narrow to wide. That part, the part that are different widths go into the slot and you adjust the tab until it snugly load the key and your done.

So the part of the key that sets the distance the advance mechanism travels sits in the slot long ways.

If that doesn’t help I’m heading to the shop and I can take some pictures if you need it.

Somewhere, Crackedback posted a chart referencing those to drill bit/ decimal sizes. My understanding is that they apply to more than just Mallory YH. Evidently Mopar copied them in some of the MP distributors

..........and here ya go.........

MP Distributor Mechanical Advance Adjustment?

From crackedback:

Want to save some scratch?

I thought about this yesterday. If you have a 1-60 drill index, use a drill bit to set the distance limiting the mechanical advance. Got a micrometer just to verify thickness of bit, shank or cutting end. Use the bit the same as those keys.

Thickness of some keys from the mallory kit.
14*: .140"
16*: .155"
18*: .170"

Looks like 2* = ~.015 change.

One person had mentioned that the 18* key actually provided 16* advance. Best to verify the amount with a timing light.

Someone else mentioned microsprings from a local hardware store for the curve speed. Might be something to look at.

.010 at the slot = 1* at the crank works for me.
