What is the maximum lift that you can achieve with a 340 J head 2.02 valves before you run into clearence issues with the valve guides??? I have heard that .450 lift is the max before you have to grind them down.

No, it's closer to .500 advertised lift, but you should check the retainer to guide clearance and make sure you run the correct matching spring for the cam you want. You may find you have to run a double spring for the cam, and in that case the heads have to be cut anyway.

It varies from engine to engine because of machining tolerances at the factory. Best thing to do is measure. Even if the heads can physically take more than .500 lift, that is about the max lift for a stock unported head anyway. Much more lift than that and performance will begin to fall off.
