Started back on my new 408 build for the 2021 race season. I just had two Cortisone shots at 11 this morning so I’m a little sore so I’m here sitting in my shop chair reading some posts. The budget build post caught my eye and I started thinking about my build and how cheaply it was going together. Shortblock is about done needing only the timing cover put on, damper, oil pump and oil pan. Some of these parts were bought over 12 years ago. Example K1 (4 inch crank) which I bought two of because the price was pretty good. Other parts like pistons were Wiseco pistons that were being discontinued. Block was freshly machined .030 over and he ended up going with a magnum engine

600.00 for machined block ready to build.
    200.00 pistons
    100.00 rings
    250.00 K1 rods
    450.00 K1 crank
    150.00 cast steel roller cam
    450.00 Bamm roller lifters
    275.00 ATI damper
65.00 HV oil pump 30% off
    350.00 balance assembly
    125.00 bronze oil pump gear

Im up to 2735.00 plus rather cheap Chevy rod bearings and main bearings. Also bought a new milidon oil pan. A7039168-CA84-4C35-ABAF-E2E7B069031E.jpeg 505218B8-5783-45A7-ADDB-37FB2AEF52C2.jpeg

Now the top end gets a little more expensive but still not crazy. The Edelbrock heads were bought bare and upgraded to 2.08 intake valves. (150.00) I bought the Indy intake used(but new) never being mounted. (225.00) I moved the pushrods so I needed 8 custom Harlan Sharp rockers build, using the springs and titanium retainers that were on a used set of heads I bought, rocker geometry kit should be the same as my old engine, and hopefully my old custom pushrods will too.

That's cheap for a short block with quality parts.

being my son races to if I see something at the right price I will jump on it and throw it on a shelf. The guy I got the crank from did a winter special when K1 first started doing Chevy sized cranks. Shipping was way cheaper back then and when we bought cranks he treated us great on bearing prices. He ran a shop in Florida called “Performance Only” but died from cancer years ago.

Yeah, the small "cheaper stuff" really adds up and can make a difference. Smart to buy things ahead of time you might need down the road.

I try to grab a deal when I see one. I have a Caliss crank cut down to Chevy size in my 572. Last year I found a used mopar sized one for 550.00 so I grabbed it. I still have my mopar rods and Wisco pistons that the valve pockets were cut for both B1 heads and 440-1 Indy heads so if they were needed for a NA bracket type deal I could have lots of options.
