Measuring driveline offset at transmission

How do you determine what your offset is from center at the transmission? Someone mentioned "measure using the pinch welds" in a b-body forum. How do you all measure it? I believe on an A-body it should be like 1 1/4 - 1 1/2" or thereabouts toward the passenger side. I just want to know what points of reference people use to measure it.
 
Inboard edge of the frame rail to output shaft centerline. You can also check pinion centerline the same way.
 
Ah, thanks. I couldn't seem to find any description of the reference points and I don't have the suspension manual.
