Dallas and I, in my truck and enclosed trailer, with Damon following in his truck and trailer, left Thursday at 5AM for Memphis -- stopping for a couple of hours and beers with a friend in Conway, AR. We arrived at our Motel at about 9PM. Early the next morning we headed to the track, to be there when it opened at 8AM. Even with being one of the first to arrive Friday -- we were put in the grass (instead of hard pits) because everyone else arrived at the track on Thursday (note to self!).



Friday, I teched in and declared to run the C/FX class -- which is 9.75 seconds in the quarter mile. That put me as declaring to be the fastest Mopar at the event. I made a T&T pass at about noon -- and it was the fastest pass I'd made in two years. See the below and ignore the RT as I got in the Pro-Tree lane and RT only counts in Eliminations.







Late in the afternoon on Friday I made my first Qualifying pass (Click Here to See Video of First Qualifying Round -- I'll be the 9th pass in the right lane) and you can see from the video that the car went up in the air -- and then dove down bouncing a couple of times. We played the tach recorder back in the pits -- and the car launched at 6000 RPM, and then dropped to 4700 RPM instead of climbing to the normal 7200 RPM that I shift at -- and then would go like a raped ape on the second half of the run. Damon thought it was the carbs and adjusted on them -- but there were no more passes to make for Friday.







Saturday my second Qualifying Pass (you make three qualify passes in two days -- and how close you get to your declared number without going faster, determines who you race. The best race the worse) the same thing happened -- but I did manage a 140.75 MPH -- which was the fastest speed of all cars qualifying, even though my time was 9.79 on my 9.75 second dial. This wound up being the pass used as the qualifying pass.







Back to the pits -- and we start to think that maybe I'm sucking air between the intake and carbs -- and tighten on them. They were a little loose. However, my last qualifying run has the same thing happen -- but I noticed in the staging lanes that my fuel pump was making strange noises. It was my worst first half of a pass yet. Again ignore the RT. I was lined up against a slow car and we were suppose to leave at the same time -- but they set his light for him to leave 1.25 seconds before me -- and it freaked me out. Again -- RT doesn't count except in eliminations.







So back in the pits we listen to it -- and it sounds bad. This is a brand new $500 fuel pump -- so I'm pissed. It was too late to do anything, and we figured that we'd not start our first Eliminations until noon on Sunday -- so that I'd just get a new fuel pump from the vendor Sunday, and slap it on plenty of time. However, there were so many wrecks on Saturday -- that they couldn't get all of the racing in -- and the rumor was our first pass might be at 9AM.



Sunday we get up at 5 am, shower, pack, check out and 12 of us meet at Perkins for breakfast. We get to the track at a little before 8AM and unload, warm up, and clean the car. There was no time to buy and swap in a new fuel pump before the first Eliminations were to run -- so I drain a little gas from lowest point of the line to see if there's water in the line -- and there wasn't. The ground connection looked suspect, so we re-wired it and scraped some paint off where it is bolted to the body of the car. It appears to sound better and so I'm called to the line in the first Elimination against the guy who is third in the points. I tree'd him and even though he left before me -- he was in my rear view mirror the whole pass. The run felt great and I was sure I was going to break out, so I slowed down to let him catch me -- and then put a fender on him across the finish line. You can see from the below print out that I hit the brakes hard to scrub about 23 MPH off to keep from breaking out. I win that round.







In round two, I was to go against Fugly -- but he blew his clutch and couldn't make the pass. So I got a BYE -- and I aired it out since I won no matter what. You can see from the below that I was even faster than my reported fastest qualifying -- despite hot and bad air.







The last round took forever to come up because of a lot of wrecks. Just before I went to the line --- there was a bad wreck and oil down in my lane. They did a piss poor job of cleaning it up. As I was moving into the burnout box -- I heard my fuel pump go nuts again. I didn't have a chance. I had a crappy RT, the car bogged from the fuel pump, then I spun in oil. I was out -- and Doug Duell (his father got me into NSS) went on to win.







We left Memphis at 7:30 and drove all night to get home at 5AM. Still haven't gone to bed.



So I have a lot of work to do before the Lone Star Shootout race here in Houston (my last race of the year) on November 10-11. It sure would be nice if my Houston family and friends came out to cheer me on Sunday morning during Eliminations.

Prior to the event, I contacted Greg Rager (editor of Mopar Muscle for 11 years, then High Performance Mopar, and now the Editor of Mopar Enthusiast) to suggest to him that although NSS is growing, and that it was Mopar's Glory Days -- that none of the Mopar magazines ever mention it. I suggested that he send someone to cover the event -- and I would explain the class, the cars and introduce him to the drivers.



Greg sent Tom Shaw (formerly the editor of Muscle Car Review -- now a free lance reporter) to cover the event. He and another photographer were at the side taking photos of launches in the 3rd Qualifying and first two rounds of eliminations. I saw the photos -- and they were better than the track photos. He also got with most of the Mopar racers for interviews, and photos of their cars. Finally, there was a group photo (below is my amateur version of it) of the Mopars willing to line up after the second round of eliminations.







Expect to see a very large magazine feature of NSS Racing in a future edition of Mopar Enthusiast. Greg will also be at the Lone Star Shootout to cover the NSS portion of the racing.
