So I got this Chrysler Gas Cap at an estate sale...There was a receipt included dated 1970. However After getting some help, It looks like the receipt was actually for a locking gas cap, As many people switched to them with gas theft being a problem back then. Looks like my cap is the original gas cap for what I believe/was told is a 1970 Plymouth Duster In Plum Crazy Purple. I was told this color is highly sought after, and just might be the cleanest example out there, as well as worth a nice chunk of change.

Thought l'd check and see if anyone had any other thoughts/ comments? Idea on value? I'm thinking i'll probably to do an auction on ebay unless anyone has any other ideas? Pics attached. Thanks so much!

The chance of the paint matching is pretty much zero so its worth whatever a gas cap is worth.

There's tons on ebay with different color that sold for 100+

What are all the ones of different colors selling on ebay for 100-200+? Guess i'm confused how they would have value but not this one? Thanks for the reply

ps..The rubber gasket has 0 dry rot...Perfect

It's a cool piece of history and that's about all.

They didn't come painted. That was obviously the original cap put back into the box where the locking cap came out of. It's worth what a replacement cap goes for. An original one may be $50 to the right person. The used beat up ones go for $25 easy. That original purple matching someone else's purple is slim to none.

There's lots listed on Ebay for $100-$200. There's also lots listed for $25 that are just as nice. Listed price does not mean that they're selling for that much, only that someone's fishing the market.
If you're convinced you can get that much, go ahead and list it- no need to ask our opinions. Maybe you'll be extremely lucky. Don't be surprised if you aren't.

Was just asking opinions and since there are solds, not listed, The reasons behind it. Never said anyone was wrong, just a valid question....Thanks for your input..Extremely helpful

So you joined the forum to find out how much your 'rare' gas cap was worth?

Its a shame you are so lazy you that you have to join a forum to get other people to do your research for you.

I say it'd probably be worth quite a bit, just as a factory paint sample.

People see a gas cap, but to an OE restoration, to someone restoring an original plum crazy paint car, it's something more.

The odds of finding said person though......

It's not factory paint. They were unpainted from the factory, like @toolmanmike said. It's possible it was dealer painted, but I don't think so. It's a pretty sloppy job for a dealer. You can see trash and imperfections in the paint. I think a dealer would have endeavored to do a better job. It doesn't look terrible, mind you, I just know if a dealer painted that for my new car, they'd done it over again. It's certainly not worthless. I'd just stick on ebay for what I thought I could get and see what happens. I remember a Texas snowball on ebay for $5,000. I don't think it sold, but hey, you gotta try I guess. LOL

Plus, look at the screws. They're both worn from being removed and replaced......probably more than a few times. This was clearly an amateur job. Like I said, not terrible, but maybe good for a 20 footer.

She's not cherry.

this just in: know nothing person stumbles on a unique part, does some cursory research and asks for a second opinion so as to wring as much possible cash out of something and then gets aggrieved when told otherwise.

I think you nailed it. Nobody insulted the guy. He's just unhappy because he's not getting the answers he's lookin for. He doesn't realize we're actually helping him. But WTF do we know? In this day and age, he might get $500 for it. lol
