I want to mount my tachometer and oil pressure outside on the cowl on my 72 Duster
when I either see pics or try to look up info on how its done I have no luck. I"ve seen a few pics but there no help in locating how they were mounted.

If anyone could explain or have a close up pic I"d appreciate it very much

Thanks in advance for anyone help

Are you trying to do a non distractive mount? Otherwise I assume start drilling.

You can use a Moroso/Stahl/Jones/Accutronic mechanical tach and bracket and mount it on the cowl.

All you need is a tach drive distributor.

The tachs/brackets are available on eBay.

This one's listed for just under $250, cool old pro stock/super stock piece.

I'm going to run mine on top of the dash and run the cable through the cowl/firewall

well I tried experimenting with this when I was trying to place my oil pres. and water temp. gauges and I found that you can get a slightly bigger bolt than the distance between the cowl slots. the slots will act as the nut and just ram rod the bolt in between them. then you can run the wires or lines under the cowl and back through the windshield washer hose holes in the bottom of the cowl.

So, kind of like this, but move the gauges back over the fins. (so no holes to drill)
then run the wires down through the fins, and out of that hole and into the engine bay and wire normally.

What oil pressure gauge is that?
that's not mine, I found that pic on the internet. I ended up mounting my gauges where the ashtray should be.
mine are just Bosch super cheapies.
I am taking them out to put in a three gauge pod that is NOS from 1981 I found in an antique store.

Here are mine although I did not do it, bought it this way. They ran the lines through a notch in the fiberglass hood

You didn't say mechanical or electrical tach....

Here's how I did a no-drill / no-cut fuel pressure gauge install.
The tube and lamp wire runs thru the windshield wash nozzle holes

2 thoughts come to mind.

One is t bolts

You would need to find the right size to span 2 slots but be narrow enough to go down between the slots. You could grind to fit these (ace hardware, home Depot, Amazon)

Either way a would sandwich a plastic strip on top of the slots then the mount.

Another more complicated solution is to feed a relatively thick plastic strip down through the slats pull it up to the slats from underneath and place another plastic strip on top and screw the mount through the top plastic onto the bottom plastic.

If you have the fender off you might be able to get a thicker plastic in through the cowel drain. With enough effort you could get it in through the drivers side inside air vent using a cord to pull it up to the slots before the top plastic and mount get screwed in.

Think the technique to put backer in a hole before patching a drywall repair

Heck if you remove the drivers side air inlet vent you could have a helper hold the inside plastic in place, you could even put some captive nuts on it.

Got another idea..
