Howdy all, cosgig here. I have had a longstanding problem with my GTX now for going on 15 years, and it's buggin' the heck out of me!! Heres the details...

When I got the car the motor wasn't running due to a spun bearing, so I don't know how it was running before I pulled the motor. The motor is the original 440, which I had out and rebuilt in 1996 or so. It has about 5000 miles since the rebuild. It is rebuilt to standard specs and is standard issue 67 stuff. I replaced the motor mount insulators with new OE rubber ones as well as the trans mount.

Ever since getting it running back in '96, the motor rocks at idle and shakes the entire car. When sitting at a light under brake idle, it really rocks the car. Off idle, no problems, and the car runs like a raped ape all through the throttle, and pulls strong. I have other cars with the rubber insulator motor mounts, so I can't believe that this car should be so much more violent on them.

Why am I worried about it after so long?? Well, the car started to develop a "clunking" sound under acceleration while under load, which I have diagnosed as the drivers side exhaust pipe banging on the crossmember cutout. Now, I wouldn't normally put the 2 issues together except that it looks like my pipes are all skewed under the car. I have a very solid mounted system with an "X" pipe and it is very well tied together. The drivers side is way up closer to the clearance areas and the passenger side has clearance to sell!! Could the motor rocking be having an effect on this, loosening and tweaking the drivers side?? I'm trying to figure that out!! All the mounts are tight, the rubber still looks good and is not cracking, so I'm at a loss here!!

It's time to remedy this once and for all, so....

Is there a polyurethane motor mount that will help this?? Is there some internal maladie that I should be looking into here?? HELP!!!!

Any input appreciated!! Thanks FABO, y'all ROCK!!! (yep, more than my motor!!) Geof

Check out Energy Suspension.I believe, they have some interlocking urethane ones,Cos.

Me first before I read all of your post, I had a bell housing work loose and it would rock and shake under the hood!!! Darndest thing I ever seen, some one did not tighten them , 1974 Satellite

Thanks guys, and yes Mike, I'm a little worried now about the possibility of stuff working loose!!

Abb, do you have any experience with urethane bushings in this application?? I don't and can only assume that they have nice insulative properties. I wonder if this rocking isn't something more than mounts and may damage a stiffer mount than the rubber!! Any thoughts?? Geof

Hey Cos, Have you ever had a vacuum gauge on the motor? Carb? Main intake vacuum port? Just to check to see where your at? Have you tried spraying carb cleaner at the intake port's, where the manifold is bolted to the head? If the engine is painted real nice, I will say it may take some paint off,
anyway, spray some at the gasket mating surface's, and while engine is running, if engine idle speed's up (rev's up), then you've found the area where there is a leak. It is also very possible, that it could be leaking some vacuum, on the underside of intake too, and then you would at least have to pull the intake to check it out. Also, spray around the base of the carb. These are at least the area's I would check out first.

Like memike said. Transmission area. Auto? Maybe loose converter bolts?

Ah, good advise boys!!Thanks!!

I was just over at my buddies house admiring his really nice vacuum guage setup, and will follow your advise straight to his door and report back. I've had the intake off a number of times and have it sealed up good, or so I think anyway!!! Ain't sayin' it's good though!! Thanks boys for the idea!! Geof

Yep, auto trans!! Actually, in the spirit of fixing things on this car, I'm pulling the trans next and replacing the shift lever pivot seal, which has also been leaking for at least 5 years!!ARRGH!! I also have a new converter to install so that'll give me time to check all the trans stuff!! Thanks for the input!! Geof

Over the years alot of the replacement parts have been consolidated and your car may at some point ended up with a pass. car (big car) converter that would be pretty tight. Like 1600-1800 stall tight. With that cam you will get some rocking at idle in gear. Hopefully your new conv. is in the 2400-3000 stall range. Might not be the whole problem, but it would sure help. imo.

The .484 Purple ,works so well in a 440.

Agreed!!! This car runs so well (other than the rocking) even though I beat the crap out of it!! Ran a best of 14:06 bone stock, footbraking to keep from breaking out, but did anyway. Should've taken it's first ever 13 sec. run instead!!LOL!! It's been a great car!! Geof
