I hope this is my last question, but is 13-15 psi of pressure at idle to little or is it ok when engine is warm/hot? It goes to 40-46psi at 2000 RPM hot, as high as 50-55 when hot at higher revs. It is another 318, runs well, no noises, except for a rocker or two that ticks a little when warm, running 10w40 Royal Purple synthetic.

Also, would a synthetic with a 5w-50 rating be too light in the morning? They do make that weight by Castrol. I just want to make sure its all ok, because besides the slight rocker tick tick, it makes no major sounds and runs great. Don't want to rebuild if not terribly needed. Thanks.

I live in Socal, so would the 5w50 be good for the morning(5 weight) and good for when it gets hot(50 weight)? Or would 20w-50 Valvoline VR1 Racing oil be better? Thanks.

With your pressure ranges the way they are now if it was me I would stick with the 10w-40. Plus I wouldn't go from a synthetic to a petro oil, to me it is kinda going backwards. I get the feeling the idle pressure is concerning you a little. If it is then I would go to a 20w-50 oil.

See thats just it...it is bothering me a bit. If it is closer to 20 psi, i would feel much better. Im sure the numbers i have now are ok, but i always look to make things better if i can, without rebuilding when i dont need to. The rest of the numbers at higher RPM's seem good, so i guess i shouldn't be concerned. I have the 20w50, so if the 5w50 synthetic isn't good, i will go to the petro oil and stay with it.

Your idle oil pressure is a bit low, but fine. Not much load at idle anyhow. I would think twice about a thicker oil. Sounds pretty normal for an engine with some miles on it. As long as the oil pressure doesn't drop at high revs I wouldn't be too worried.

My race motor only has 20psi hot idle and the Buicks' I used to run before I was a Mopar guy only had 8-10psi hot idle so don't let it get you down. It really is of no issue with your at 10-20psi, now if it was like 20psi @2000 I would start worrying.

Rule of thumb has always been roughly 10 psi per 1000 rpm. Anything over 10 psi at idle is ok. Just means it has had some good times in the past and is telling you it is getting to middle age, LOL.
