hello, i recently picked up this 65 barracuda, i am wanting to restore it. i believe it is a formula s but i have not ran the fender tag yet, but is seems to have a lot of the options. i do not know a lot about these little a bodies. i mainly have been more of a dart guy. but i really love this car already and i just brought it home. any info. or help would be awsome.here are some pictures.

thanks
Jason

It appears to be a Commando engine. It could be an S but the Commando without the S option was I believe more rare. Post a pic of the tag and we can run the options for you.

ok, i dont have a picture but i will do my best to post everything on it

i am out of town, and my brother read them to me over the phone, so they should be close
thank you in advance for the help

The 31 under the ab indicates it to be a 273 4barrel 235hp. The 2 under c indicates Formula S according to earlycuda web site

Note sure how to decode the rest

Nice find!

It's a cammando engine, which would be correct for a Formula S. If it has swaybars, then it should be an S.

Swaybar does not mean its an S. I now have a couple Commando cars with a swaybar that are not S cars. The fender tag is the only way to confirm an S option or a dash mounted factory tach.

mine has the dash tach, but i read somewhere online, that they also made a rally package the came with the tach, is that info. correct. i will check to see what website i found that on. until then i never of a 65 barracuda rally
thanks

The rallye pack car came with 13 inch wheels, no sway bar, and most did not have the tach- it was basically the commando 273 without the formula s additions.

Your tag comes back as: 273 4bbl 235 HP engine,Formula S,Automatic,Heater with defrost,Power brakes Built Feb. 3 and painted Dark Blue Metallic

Nice find moparnut. Would be awesome to see another formula s restored. Good luck and you'll get an unbelievable amount of help from the members here.

Here is the codes;

AB = 31, 273 x 4bbl
C = 2, Barracuda Formula S package
D = 3, 4-speed Hurst shifted
E = 5, Heater with defroster
G = 1, unknown
I = 8, unknown
L = 2, unknown

203, built February 3, 1965
00034 Invioce number
V89 Barracuda
P = Premuim, front buckets
4 = Vinyl bucket seats
8 = must be wrong!!
E = Upper body/roof color dark blue metallic
E = Body color, dark blue metallic
4 = Paint style, painted racing stripes
E = Side sweep color, unknown on Barracuda, probably color of stripes
T = Upper door frame color, dark blue metallic

Question! Can it be T8 and Z2 on the fendertag? Instead of I8 and L2!

there could be a mistake or 2, i will take a picture of it when i get home, which will be friday, as i work out of town. it should be close but my brother read them to me over the phone
thanks for all the help, as i am sure i will need more as i go. as this is the biggest project i have ever taken on, but i thought it was worth saving!
thanks

Welcome to FABO and good luck with your build...

thanks for all the help guys!
i am now trying to decide if i am ready to tackle this size of project, i only have a 2 car garage, and the dart can not sit outside
what is the best way to strip the rust and paint? dip, soda blast or just 80 grit and a DA?

The engine you have pictured looks as though it is from an automatic car and the car appears to be a 4 speed Formula S.

the guy i bought it off of has owned it since 1971 and he pulled the motor and tranny in 1981 and stored the motor and tranny in the barn since then
the motor has a date of november 6 1964

How are is the motor different from a auto and a stick?
i thought the only difference would be the bell housing and the carb lickage

I dont know if it is fact or not but the engines I have seen with an auto had the adjuster in the middle of the adjuster screws on the carb. This is for adjustment on opening the secondaries. On the manual engines I have noticed they dont have that and are a manual dump on the secondaries. I hope you can understand what I mean by this.

i think i understand, i dont really know a whole lot about the details on these early a bodies. and i do not know if the carb is original or not, but i believe the motor is. the bell housing for the 4 speed is still attached and i also have the 4 speed and all the linkage, i will post more pictures when i get home
thanks for the information, please keep it coming

soda blast is my recommendation. You have a cool car there! If you have an eco clean business there that dips in a non acid dip, that is good, but most dips will eat too much metal. After the soda blast, get it in a good etching primer to lock the rust out. You will be able to find almost everything you need on this site. Post what you need in the wanted section, and you'll see. That color will look cool as most folks go with the reds, whites, golds, and that blue would be unique! Welcome to FABO!
