I bought a 318 engine torque converter and 727 transmission. Im trying to put it together to turn it over but when i went to put the torque converter on the transmission it wouldn't fit the transmission was to small. Do i need a smaller torque converter. How do i identify what torque converter i have.

904 TQs won't fit 727's

Some 727s were "lockup" and had a different front shaft setup

http://www.technicalvideos.com/what_year_727.phtml

The "lockup" trans had a smooth spot at the very end of the shaft, the "standard" 727s had the splines go right to the end of the shaft

There may be other differences I'm not aware of

My guess is you have a 904 converter which as 67Dart pointed out won't work in a 727.

What did you take the converter out of?

Not sure i bought the tc engine and tranny from a guy he was sure it would work. How do i find out what my tc is. Im sure my engine is out of a 73 barracuda and not sure what year the tranny is but by the way the pan looks its a 727.

Are there numbers somewhere on the tc i can see what i have

On stock converters there's none I've ever been able to decipher. As you were asked earlier, post some pics of the converter and the transmission input shaft. We can't guess what you have by a vague description. A picture is worth a 1000 words (as long as it's good quality, LOL)

Ok its a 904 with a 727 tc i finally got the 904 tc does anyone know what are torque specs for the flex plate to crank and flexplat to tc on a 904 thanks for the help guys

Assuming were talking 5/16" bolts I think their 22 lb. ft. if I remember right but I can rarely get a torque wrench in there so I just crank them down tight with a std. 7/16" wrench. Put a couple drops of loctite on them so they don't vibrate loose.

This is what I do ^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^
But I just looked and the torque converter to drive plate bolts show to be 23 ft-lbs,, you was close fishy68 =D>

I have a torque wrench and its hard to get in there could i just tighten them really tight with loctite and call it a day or do they have to be torqued to exactly 23lbs

Like I said in my earlier post it's hard to get a torque wrench in there so I just use a wrench with a little loctite. Never had one fall apart yet

They changed spline count in 67 I think along with the snout size. Use a long box wrench and some red (removeable) loctite and get them snug to the point of not coming loose. 23 ft lbs is only a 18 lb pull on a 18" breaker bar, and so on.
