hello all i am about to take the 3sp out and put in a 4sp in my 73 duster slightly built 318 ( cam, 340/360 heads, 670 holly ). i am looking at getting a new flywheel and clutch when i do the swap. i have done some reading and the centerforce dual friction clutch is what i am going to go with. i have that part but i am looing at flywheels on summit and they range from 33lbs to 12.2lbs. i dont know what a stock one weighs and if i spend $30 more i can get a 13lb flywheel over the 29lb flywheel. im not doing any hardcore racing but i do like to take it to the strip and play with me friends in their imports. i do drive it a lot on the street so i dont want to do anything to stop me from doing that. all the info i have looked up are people with high hp and tq motors or big blocks that say they love the light weight but i cant find anyone with a slightly built 318.

so any help would be awesome guy
 
Some will say that the lighter the better. I'll say, middle of the road for a middle of the road build. Light flywheels have less inertia to overcome thus require less HP to move and that adds up to a little quicker throttle response.
However, the less the inertia, the easier it is to have the trans drag on the engine. Usually it will take a little higher RPM while releasing the clutch from a dead stop so you don't bog the motor, and really light flywheels have a tendency to be clattery ( like a UPS truck ).

Notice the Mopar performance flywheel is right in the middle as far as weight??? 18.5 Lbs ;)
 
I've been looking at flywheels for my 408 build. This one fits your 318. It's 32 pounds but it's only $68!!!

I haven't found anyone yet who can say anything good or bad about it?!?
 
I say go heavier. Generally, light wheels are for light, low geared cars with a LOT of HP. Heavy flywheels prevent low end bog, and with a "little" engine will help more than hurt.

Also, larger (as in 360 or BB) engines have more rotating mass, a flywheel in itself, and require "more clutch" which adds THAT amount, and therefore can easily use a light wheel.


There just might be a reason!!!! that the factory put those big wheels in factory cars.
 
player1 up... that makes since i have a mild build go with one in the middle. i dont want it to clatter either.

brian t... when i looked up my car in the search engin that flywheel didnt come up.

67 dart273... they did put big wheels on these cars for a reason on factory cars but i have never heard of someone putting on a heavier one when they uped the power and gained.

how much does a stock flywheel weigh?
 
With your combo i would not go lighter than 20 lb. For the reasons mentioned earlier with inertia/chattering problems. You'll be disappointed with the outcome. Stock is around 30lb.
