Hello all I have the complete Drive train out of a 1963 Chrysler Newport, and I am rebuilding the Engine, Transmission, and rear Axle to put in my 67 Barracuda, My problem is the rear axle at this point I cant get any dimensions on the Axle, I know it is an 8 3/4 but the rear axle list that I see around does not have the 63 axle listed, I have measured the Axle while it has no axles in the housing and it measures 55 inches from flange to flange, but I don't know what it would measure with the drums and hardware on it I cant get any Info on the 63 axle, any help will be greatly appreciated.

That's probably a tapered axle housing.

Dr diff told me I can convert from tapered to non tapered I just need to make sure I have the dimensions correct in order to get the correct length axles to convert it. and it was tapered on the drums, the Axle its self is standard build 241 case bolt in axles in to housing even the bearing size is the same I just need to know info on dimensions to see if it will fit properly under my 67 Barracuda.

Instead of fishing here, just call Cass, if You're getting the conversion axles they'll be able to tell You exactly what the drum-to-drum will be.

I asked him but he said he didn't have any info on that axle other than it was a tapered axle nobody includes it on a list of 8.75 Chrysler axles

Look at the start of the drivetrain forums. There is a sticky with a chart of dimensions. Axle length you may have to do some digging to find.

I would consider narrowing it to stock "a" body dimensions. If you don't want to do that, use his axle calculator to figure out everything else. I narrowed a dana 60 to stock "a" body width and got to use the stock lenght axles. His calculator says it uses 2 1/2 inch wide brakes shoe's. Using the housing as it is, means the axles are probably going to be " custom price".

yeah Ive done that there is no 63-64 8.73 inch rear axle listed for the early 60s Newport Body which is not a C body

RustyRatRod is from GA. Don't know how close he is to you. Pm or ask if therr is angry member close to you that can help you ot in narrowing the housing. These guys/gals on FABO are a GREAT BUNCH OF PEOPLE. They are like your uncles/aunts. Someone should be able to help.

Look, You just posted the housing is 55" flange-to-flange. Cass has to know what drum brakes they're set up for with stock backing plates, & what the axle flange to housing flange dimension is, take that dimension×2 & add it to 55" + 1/4" for the slip-on drums......thats Your new drum-to-drum.

Ok so I need to know which brakes I need

If it's using the stock shoes & hardware, You just need to know what drums/size to purchase, these are aftermarket conversion axles....the axle flange to housing flange dimension shouldn't be a mystery, neither should the brake component requirements.

I was thinking about the disc setup but it's a little out of my price range

The flanges are standard 8.75 flanges same dimensions as all 8.75 rear axles, flanges are 1/4 inch thick bearings are standard size, I don't have backing plates as I had to cut the old tapered drums off with a plasma cutter, "rust welded together", but I did get everything safely off and have a great housing, bearings need replacing on the pinion and final drive chunck
