need some quick advice on ford rear end 3rd member

im running a ford 9" in my valiant. im going to go look at a 3rd member today from a guy, he said it has 4:56 gears. the guy said it also is a posi. i was wondering if someone can tell me what i need to look for when i go look at it so i know hes not lieing. thanks for the help

If the gears don't have any numbers on them you can count the teeth on the gears & divide to get the ratio. Divide the ring gear teeth by the pinion teeth. If you're no good at math bring a calculator. As far as "posi" or whatever you want to call it, if it has a set of spider gears in there it's gonna' be an open rear. If it has clutches or a bunch of stuff that won't let you see through the middle of the carrer, it's probably a locker or posi of some type or another.
