hello guys, i need some advice

my boy wants a video camera for christmas and i have no idea what to get him
he wants something he can use to post videos to youtube and likes the idea of a a gopro but is not set on anything

obviously price is an issue, i would not like go over $200.00 but i understand you get what you pay for

second important thing is interface, like i said he wants to upload his videos to youtube so however that works easily would help

any suggestions?

Many ways to go. For the vast majority of YouTube, 720P is overkill.
For transfer, also many. Tried and true USB to computer. I just yank the memory card out and stick it into my computer, or a "card" reader which is then USB. Many new cameras have bluetooth or other wireless transfer capabilites.

This video (the battery died LOL) was uploaded with a camera I paid 80 for used, a little Canon SX500 IS. It is NOT primarily a video camera, but a still camera with video capabilities

I don't know whether you are looking for a "GoPro" --ish or "general purpose" camera which would be more versatile. If that, you might put "Canon Refurbished" into search and look around there. I've bought several cameras from them that way, and they ALL looked and functioned "as new" with a reduced price (and reduced warranty.)

I bought a $50 GoPro knockoff off of Amazon, cheap but does the job. I need to upload the video tommy laptop to verify it's quality, but it's a 4k capable camera. Came with the same stuff a GoPro gets. If you are doing anything that needs a suction cup mount, the GoPro unit is worth the price, I paid $40 and would do so again. There are plenty of cheaper alternatives based off the GP.

You didn't say how fancy you wanted to go. I use my old Sony Cybershot 7.2 Mega pixel camera for videos. It has a rechargable battery and a removable memory card and has a zoom feature. It also comes with battery charger. They sell for cheap on ebay. I made an offer of $10 (and the offer was accepted) on the last one I bought. If your son accidentally breaks it it's inexpensive to replace and you don't have to get upset about it. My first one lasted 7 years then last year I had to buy the replacement one for $10. Now I have two chargers and a spare battery!! FYI - I also see them on Facebook Marketplace so you might find one locally.

I like that one. Price is good. I have a 10-year old Sony HD camcorder (paid about $450 for it). 1080P. EVERY video gets edited as far as I'm concerned. At the very least there will be useless footage at the beginning and end. There is also a lot to be said for a quality point and shoot still camera with video capability. If you want to include stills in the video you want a better still camera than found in a camcorder.

I've used several programs for video editing. My go to is Pinnacle (just bought the latest), but if you have great graphics DaVinci may still have a free version.

Thanks

I found a different vendor (also on walmartdotcom) who had it for $150.00

So I ordered him that one

I'll have my boy look into the editing software, I don't think he's delving that deep into it

He shouldn't be happy without some editing capability. So many things you can do with it. I do slide show videos to music, how to videos, old family and school videos, green screen, etc.

I have a Nikon coolpix l380. My limitation with it is the sd cards they fill up and you need to delete or switch cards. I have a few spares and it works enough to make videos, but Not sure its what you or your son wants. I use windows movie maker for software.
