New 318 roller cam setup

-
Hey Prine, where did ya get the turbo set up and how much?

Good points you make on the roller cam LA engines. Clear advantages to this version over older ones. Plus they are all over the place... Looking like a certain red Fifth Ave. might be donating its parts to my project.

Thanks for sharing.

lol...Nah Louis.

You are Momentarily Confused....

MY Duster...has a Roller Cam 360....My Duster is my toy/dream car.
Here is my Roller Cam 360 that is in the Duster

THIS Dart....is my wife's project car, that is staying a regular daily driver BUT will get bodywork and painted and the interior gone through, when I get my Duster Driving...with the TURBO.

I am mounting the turbo on the passenger side like this pic

Hoping the wife lets me get a TiG welder with my income tax return!

I wife tells me I am permanently confused......... haaa:D

I get it now.

LOL

Did you notice what the engine on the stand with the turbo was?

It's not Prine's. He just posted that pic to illustrate his intentions and the style that he plans to use in his build.

:D

Um, ya, got that, um, what part of the question did you miss? I jst wanted to know where you would get that set up. So did someone else. Still waiting on the answer.

Small Block Chevy....... Those guys can buy Turbo Headers and just about everything else needed to build a Turbo set up at the local mini mart. Its just not fair!

So, about those cams for factory roller motors...

Are the ones in the major vendor's catalogs compatible, or are they made to work in a non-factory roller motor?

Is the cam/ lifter setup in the late LA (mid 80s to early 90s) the same as the magnums?

I'd like to go a couple steps up the cam ladder in my 87 318, but I've never torn into a roller motor.

LOL, ya no doubt, what else is new? OO, I blew a ... I'll just go to 7-11 and get it in the turd section..."

You need to purchase a few books starting with hot to rebuild and then hot to hot rod my small block MoPar as well as a MoPar engines book. Your questions are valid but are major league basic.

No.

There is a very different lobe pattern on a Roller Cam than a Flat Tappet Hydraulic Cam. It is obvious if you are holding 2 cams side by side.

The roller cam has a very fast ramp (up), and almost a flat section in the tip of the lobe and a fast close ramp. The flat tappet cam has more pointy lobes with a small pointy almost tip of the lobe.

The difference is the roller lifter translates the motion to the pushrod which in turn translates to the rocker and valve, faster, and with less friction, which equals more effecient.

What you gain is more vacuum, and a smoother less friction valvetrain.

There are places out there that sell off the shelf Hyd. Roller Cams'. But I would have one custom ground to my own recipe.

Split Duration
224-I / 232-E@ .050, 268/272 advertised .500" lift 110* centerline
is a good power maker, street driver, with great sound and manners...with all the supporting mods...4bbl, headers, duals, 3.23/3.55's...yummy....with boost, will be delicious.

Now, to answer your question Rob.
I do not HAVE a Turbo setup just yet....that SBchevy pic just illustrates the layout and gives a good visual of what my SBM-1T is gonna look like....Louis makes the magic happen faster than I do. I am going to custom make my own system...Alot like Cuudak has,....and STAY BLOW THROUGH, with a CSU boost prepped carb, but with a small block.
89' 360 roller cam, stock internal longblock, with windage tray, and timing tensioner added...stock crank, rods, CAST pistons...(they are 8.5:1)
I am going to get with Precision Turbo Engineering and custom SPEC my compressor and exhaust sides....probably NOT going to buy a Ebay variant....just because its hard to get what you pay for when you cant spec your wheel/choke sizes...except by Ebay's selection....costs 700-1000 bucks, but in the end, its the right one, and right for the setup.

MY power goal for my Duster is 600rwhp.

Thank dude. Looking forward to this build.

I have rebuilt a few engines, but it's been almost 20 years.
I've read the Larry Shepard books.
I also understand how roller cams work.

What I am asking is- are there direct aftermarket replacement roller cams for these pre-magnum roller blocks? I have been on Comp, Hughes, and Lunati's websites, and they either list LA style solid or hyd flat tappet, or Magnum style solid or hyd roller.

Finding replacement upgrade cam info for these specific pre-magnum roller motors is proving difficult. I probably don't have the budget for a custom grind.

Usually people on this board are very helpful, and I appreciate that.
I was hoping someone could point me to one they have used, or at least a site that says they are for this specific application.

I was wondering if there were any cost effective cams for these as well.

Also wondering if the Magnum style roller cams would work in the LA roller cam block...

Surely someone knows.

:burnout:

Talkin about buyin the ring and pinion gears packed poorly....I just recently got a set from pishta. Shipped all the way from Californica to Georgia in a 10 buck flat rate box. They were packed so good it was bombproof. Gotta give credit!

Short of sending an existing cam core from you,no as far as I know. Not much call for 86 to 91 rollers on a budget. When I called Crower for my Maggie roller, new core. And the casting nos matched a Comp hyd flat tappet from 86 I picked up cheap.

Not sure I understand what you just said...

This may sound elementary, but how can regrinding a existing cam result in a new profile that has more lift or longer duration? This seems physically impossible, without adding new metal to the lobes.
