It was just a matter of time for me to start wandering into the 70s! I gotta say i dont regret it. This car has everything that i thought that i didnt care about, but its nice to have...
power steering
power brakes
disc brakes
bucket seats

but, its missing tons of stuff!!!

So, she is in non running shape, but im gonna dig in asap. lets hope all the stories the guy told me about it having a good running 318 and a rebuilt 904 are true.

This is a resto-mod approach of using old parts that i refurbish myself.

Sounds normal, but its so hard to resist just buying new parts!!!

And, im no expert! So, i will be learning a lot along the way.

Here is a pic i snapped when i first saw her sitting in a driveway by my work. I could tell it had been a while since she was driven, so i left a note asking to talk about her future on the door. a deal was struck, and i dragged her home.

the old owner had recently bought this grille off of ebay. score! that never happens!

i looked at some pre-fabbed kits already!
But, to keep with the spirit of the build, ill have to fab em myself. so, that will be a bit later. i have some friends that have a metal shop, so its gonna happen. im so excited!
 
Ok, as i mentioned, the guy i bought her from told me it ran at one time. however, i could see that it hadnt run in a long time. BUT IT SHOWED PROMISE!!! he mentioned that the car ran for a while after he swapped the slant 6 for a 318. Furthermore he mentioned several times that the carburetor was running to rich. I spyed an exploded muffler, so i thought it seemed more like a timing issue. (my dad told me he exploded the muffler on a rental one time, when he shut the car off at speed on the highway, and then re-started it at 60mph!)

so anyhow...

lets trouble shoot!
 
So the car came with two carbs...

In the trunk! so, i had a choice. A carter bbd or a stromberg ww

both looked clean and looked as though they had been rebuilt. I thought the bbd seemed to be the better choice just by experience. ive had them before and had no problems. however the screws that hold the body together were kinda chewed up(never a good sign), so i took it apart for inspection.
 
well, not surprised that i found major problems.

the accelerator pump spring was missing, and the spring that holds the metering rods back was incorrect.

what the hell? :wack:

it looks like that stromberg is getting called up to the majors!

it passed inspection. but, how the hell does an air cleaner go on it? like, what hold it down?

i can tell its just gonna be a temp. just to see if the engines any good.

i made some decent progress today. man, its been a while since ive been able to work on her.

so, heres what i have been running(pictured). honestly, its sucks. its really really really slow. and also, the stromberg carb is not my idea of an appropriate part. it has no way, that i can figure out, to put an aircleaner on it, and it also spews a bunch of gas out of the vent when i shut it off. i imagine its a needle and seat issue, because the engine keeps pretty cool. i just cant see the fuel boiling out. but, whatever the case is... its time for it to go!
it served a great purpose of helping me to see if there were any oil or water leaks, if the transmission works, if the engine smokes or knocks, braking quality, and all other drivabilty issues that you cant know if the car just sits there in non running condition.

i about blew out my bungus breaking loose the old intake. wow, it was really stuck down well.

i protected everything from debris the best i could. i was very very careful while scraping the surfaces. after scraping i vacuumed out the debris, and used xylene to clean all the mating surfaces.
it takes a long time to do anything when you are careful. the day was just flying by.

i took the ole greasy manifold over to the car wash, and went nuts on it. then, i painted it up and plugged any holes i didnt want to use.

i followed the directions that were provided from fel-pro closely, and i had no problems at all!


already looks better in there

ahhhhhh. now, thats wussup!

it looks so much better now! i cant wait to see how this thermoquad runs. ive used them in the past and had great luck! i like holley products as well, but im shooting for better economy than a 600cfm holley will offer. so, we will see. i remember getting the best economy out of the thermoquads.

put a few final touches in, and called it a night.

my back is killing me!

there are still a few loose ends to tie up before i can fire it up.

next headache to tackle is the throttle, and kickdown...

Don't forget to block off that EGR passage directly under the throttle linkage. Nice progress.
