New gal from UT here! Need some help.

Hello!

I’ve just purchased my first project vehicle, a 4-door 1968 Plymouth valiant with a 273 V8 engine, in honor of my father who passed away last year. I realize the 4-doors aren’t the most popular, but I sincerely don’t mind it at all. My father had one very similar to this one that I had always wanted as a teenager/young adult. He was passionate about anything mechanical, especially computers and cars. I hope to carry on his legacy through learning how to work on cars and to have fun with it also.

My knowledge is very minimal on car mechanics (although I grew up with old cars, car parts strewn throughout and outside our house), but I’m very determined to learn. I was directed her by several individuals who said this was by far the best place to begin my journey and I am so glad I have joined.

The previous owner apparently had the engine rebuilt, put a 4-barrel elderbrook carburetor, rebuilt the radiator, and put 16 inch wheels and shock absorbers on it also.

There are several issues with the car as of right now; the AC doesn’t work because the compressor is out (they gave it to me, but pretty sure it is broken and were planning to get it fixed), the heater doesn’t kick on (apparently it worked last winter), doors don’t lock which isn’t a hard fix, radio doesn’t work, and the issue I am the most concerned about at the moment is the possible electrical issue going on with it.

When it’s running, everything flickers in the car and the ammeter needle bounces slightly when doing this, the ammeter needle will dip lower when I am driving and holding the brake at a light, it will go to the half point while parked and bounce.

I went and got the battery checked, was told it needed to be charged up, but should be okay, we tested the alternator while the car was on and idling, but it was showing a zero reading.

I’m guessing it is the alternator, the regulator, or possibly a fuse related problem? Any suggestions would be sincerely appreciated. Or if anyone has pointers on why the heater will not work also, I’d appreciate it greatly! I’m unsure if it is even possible to “fix” the old A/C compressor Either, so any feedback with that would be great also.

Welcome, and you were told right. This is the best forum on the net for your A body. There are herds of experts to help you get your car sorted out.

Thats a fine looking 4-door, and it looks like it has good bones. And it comes with a cool story.

If it was mine, I would start with the electrical and get to the A/C later. The inop heater could be as simple as a blown fuse, check there first.

Did the previous owner keep it up well? If not there will be some safey related things to check out.

Your elec issue needs to be addressed ASAP! These cars are known for elec demons and can literally burn up.
The flickering ammeter is a giveaway of an issue. In my opinion do not drive it until you get that problem fixed. Make sure the voltage regulator is grounded well. Chk condition of all wiring and connections.
Maybe post your question in electrical forum to get more eyes on it.

Welcome from Kansas. This forum has quite a few ladies as members, and we value their input. I love 4 door cars. Some of the best times I have ever had at car shows was talking to the owner of a four door car who has fixed it up and gotten it looking really nice and was as proud of it as if it were a 70 Hemi Cuda Convertible. They show you what they did and we wind up having such a nice chat. I love 4 door cars and their owners.
 
Welcome! Good looking car. You've identified several issues. Break them down, prioritize and tackle them 1 at a time and you'll do fine. You'll want to figure out that electrical issue first.
 
Welcome! Nice car! I would focus on the electrical first. Sometimes it can be as easy as proper grounds (although I'm no electrical guru..lol)
 
Welcome aboard! It's nice to have another woman aboard. With the 4 barrel swap, there could be a good chance that your kickdown linkage is not right. You need to find someone to look at it and make sure it's there and functioning correctly. If not correct, your transmission life will be cut short. Maybe you can take the air breather off and post some pictures of the left side of the 4bbl throttle bracket and linkage. Good luck!

Welcome aboard, I agree with all the comments above, your car should be a great project and a tribute to your late father, as mentioned above first things first is to get the electric sorted out. Like 4spdragtop said now your introduction is done move over to the electrical forum and post your questions there, let's start by finding out what basic tools you have and how much maintenance you are prepared to do. You will need a basic ( it can be inexpensive, Harbour Freight or what ever you guys use down there ) multimeter , this tool will become your best friend with a old car and probably ride with you where ever you go. Then a basic socket and wrench set plus screw drivers, a few electrical test leads, again HF or make them. With those tools you will tackle most of the basic maintenance. Good luck along your new hobby and were here to help!

It seems like this is exactly where I need to be! I’m so glad I was told about this forum, real happy to be here!

I honestly don’t know how much up keeping it was getting done, but pretty sure they were getting oil changes done on it, not really aware of what else.

What safety related things would you recommend I check out with it?

Will do, but tell me because I’m very curious to know, why is it good to disconnect the batter while it’s sitting?

Yikes well I have been driving it the last couple of days, but I won’t anymore! Only issue is, I just refilled with gas yesterday so just don’t want the gas to sit too long. Guess I better figure out this electrical issue quick.

Thank you! Very happy n excited to be here but that is absolutely not what I want to happened with the transmission. Geez I didn’t realize this electrical issue could be this detrimental. I will for sure take a photo of that to post. I’m going to post on the electrical sub for some more input also. I appreciate your info and will check my 4-barrel today.

Thank you. I’m planning on making a pos tin the electrical forum here soon. I don’t have a multimeter or test leads, but I will go get those today, I also have a pretty good amount of tools in a toolbox set I have. Sorry for my ignorance, but what is HF stand for?
