I have a 72 dart with 4 speed. When I did the swap last year I used a set of original shifter rods, and an original shifter mechanism that I thought was in good shape. The last couple of months my shifter has gotten stuck in gear 3 times where I had to drive the car home in 3rd gear. I would then have to get under the car and disconnect the rods and get it out of gear. Despite using all new washers and clips the shifter always felt a little sloppy.

My question is does hurst make an after market shifter mechanism and rods that would work. I have the old style original 4 speed shifter handle that presses into the shifter mechanism with out bolting.

Should I also replace the shifter plates that attach to the tranny that the rods attach to. The setup I have now does not have any bushings where the shifter rod ends connect to the bottom of the shifter mechanism and no bushings where the rods connect to the plates on the tranny. Is this correct or should there be any type of bushings.

I put a Hurst Indy shifter in my 68 Barracuda. It is an a-body specific one that comes with new levers for the tranny, rods, the adapter to bolt to the tranny and all the hardware necessary to install it. The only down side is it comes with a short 7" straignt handle that bolts on. That was an easy fix though; I just picked up a handle I liked at a swap meet for a couple of bucks cut it to the length I wanted drilled the two holes and mounted it. I am quite sure you could drill the holes in the plug in handle you have. It doesn't have the adjustable stops the Competition Plus has but the frame is dimpled where they go so I drilled them out and tapped the frame for the stops too.

The shifter works great; nice short precise throws. It was about $150 from Jegs.

Hurst used to have a rebuild service that was very reasonable. think that they still have it. A factory shifter works very well when it is in top notch condition. the factory shifters didn't have the bushings in the shifter or levers. You could add stop bolts to the factory shifter mechanisms if you wanted though.
