No one seems to know?

It is unsprung weight so no effect on shocks or springs. I wouldn't think more than 25 pounds difference favoring the 8.75.

ive seen 8 1/4 rear ends take 400 plus horsepower. im sure the weight difference isn't enough to really matter unless its critical. they are both heavy as all get out

maybe your personal experience , but not mine , ive been doing this for 30 plus years and never seen one explode including drag cars. maybe you had a used up one to begin with...
ive seen 904's explode without taking out the 8 1/4

that includes running a 7.25 on a 360 Bcuda. I am not a 'want to be drag racer' but have done the occasional burnout etc. I asked the weight difference since the 8.75 are so pricey but finding a narrow 8.25 is probably not easy either. Someone mentioned 60-70 lbs difference, but that may have been between the 7.25 and 8.75-not sure, and it appears that no one has really weighed them. I tried to find the specs but could not.
