I have 12 volts getting to my reverse lights weather I am in R or D. There are 0 volts in park or neutral. I just replaced my NSS and it had this same issue with both switches........ Does anybody have any clues? My new NSS works properly as far as preventing my car from starting in gear.

Slightly out of adjustment linkage, or wrong NSS for the trans.

I'm not an expert on the transmission internals. I've read that the "rooster comb" can be bent.

I'd jack up the car, unhook shift linkage at the trans so I can "feel" the internal detents and check that way.

wrong year valve body for that style switch?

Oh hell I'm not thinkin'

Yep if you have a 68? / earlier trans, (valve body) it would have had a single post NSS, and the reverse light switch would have been on the shifter / column.

I am not sure of the year of the transmission. The car has wiring for a 3 pin NSS, that's what was in it but maybe I have an early trans so I am SOL. Is there any way to check the year of the transmission?

The number on the pan rail of the trans will show the details of it, uncluding year.

You can download the trans ID document from my website here [ame="http://www.classichei.com/transguide.pdf"]www.classichei.com/transguide.pdf[/ame]

I'll place my quarter bet on wrong rooster comb in the trans. In some cases a mismatched application will damage the switch so I have to ask...
Was the switch you removed broken ? If it was you can expect to find the new one now broken.

The old switch was not broken but the tip was very worn, you could tell it had been around awhile. My guess is the wrong rooster comb........I will see if I can find the trans number and determine what year it is.

Hi guys, I am having the same issue and was wondering what the best fix is, A) replace NSS with single pin and rewire or B) replace comb?

Many thanks

The reverse lamp switches that were located inside the cabin have their issues.
If you have a floor mounted automatic shifter, there are more options including fabricating an actuator for different switch.
If you have a column mounted shifter, repairs at the trans is probably the best and maybe the only route available.
