Hi Guys ,my gas guage goes to full when I fill up the tank
but when it gets to empty it still has about 8 gallons left
does anyone know the best way to adjust this? Thanks
 
There are 2 different designs of sender found in a-bodies. I'll bet a quarter you have the sender with its electronics in a square enclosure. There is your problem. That one collects debrie and screws itself. Another possibility is a saturated float ( fuel got inside it ). In any case...
Buy a new sender. Dont buy the cheap one with the plastic float.
All reprodcution senders have the half moon enclosure. The new sender will include a new rubber seal and lock ring. Do use the new seal with no sealant, just clean surfaces. Toss that new lock ring in the garbage and reuse the original lock ring.

I don't know if this helps, but I am having the same problem. I have an autometer fuel gauge, 73-10 ohm range like the factory, with a replacement sending unit that is also 73-10 ohms. However, mine shows full when full, then sharply goes to empty, with about half a tank left, like yours. When I called Autometer's tech line, they said that the original sending unit was not a linear resistance throughout the travel, meaning it was not 41.5 ohms at half tank, and this is how they designed their gauge, to work with the factory unit. He said that most new repo units are linear, which is why they read right at empty and full, but not in between. I haven't dug too deep into it yet, but it makes sense in my world. You may also have the same problem. Can anyone else elaborate?
 
Whoever said half tank sould be anywahere near 41 ohms is wrong. I know what the factory spec for half tank is but I can't give away that info , sorry.
 
Yes I agree with you, 41 ohms is wrong. What the autometer tech was saying is that the new repo sending units that you can buy now, most of them are a linear resistance, which figures out to be around 41 ohms at half tank. This is why I believe that some people are having issues with their factory gauges not reading right with these sending units. They were designed as a non linear resistance unit. I think one problem probably is that Ford used the same resistance range, so you probably have a one size fits most phenomenon going on here. Out of curiousity, why can't you tell us what the resistance is at 1/2 tank?

There's a good ebay seller that sells A body sendin units with 3/8" supply line and brass for 50 bucks. I got one and it's top notch.

I think the truth is the reproduction senders are correct. It's the aftermarket gauges that dont match up.
I've serviced a bunch of OEM gauges and atleast half of those owners have repop senders. No problems reported to me.
My own repop sender came from Vans Auto on ebay. It operates same as OEM.
 
I Have The Same Problem, Purchased A New 3/8 Sending Unit And Reads Full When Full But Goes To Below Half Reel Fast Then To Empty As Quick. Is There A Fix For This, I Know My 440 Is Hard On Gas But Not That Hard.

What gauge do you have ?
 
the guage on mine is stock with the aftermarket sending unit
which is new and is crap. Is there a smple fix for this? The electronics are in a square inclosure
 
There may be a problem with some of the repop senders. News to me though.
Mine works fine.
