How can you tell the difference between a 727 or a 904 when its installed in your car. My car did not have any kick down set up when I got it, it was also missing the kick down lever on the gear box. Bloke I brought it from said that it was a 727 so I got a flexable kick down kit (Lokard ) and sourced a lever. Trouble is that the kick down lever has a 'D' shaped cutout that must slip on the spline above tha selector arm. On mine it is just a small shaft that sits above the selector arm, not sure what I've got or am I missing another part.
Any Ideas?

Very, very easy. Get down and look at the passenger side of the pan. The 904 side pan rail is straight along the side, but the 727 has a large bulge in towards the front of the side rail

Here:

Many filters come with both gaskets. The 727 is on the far right, the gasket actually "upside down" but you see the bulge

One correction. The photo has a note that the 727 only came w/ BB or RB engines. Probably not 273's note. I have a SB 727 and I read that they were used with slants in taxi's and maybe trucks.

Thanks for all the info. think that I have worked out that the box has been changed to a manual shift as the shaft is not broken or worn it looks like it has been cut and cleaned up.
