It would be nice if other large US companies would follow suite...and I think the profit margin is higher at companies like Jegs then it is at LL Bean...

Unfortunately the trend seems to be going the other way, outrageous shipping and handling charges, it has become the new profit center for some companies.

So if a person or company chooses not to ship to Canada does that mean they aren't classy?

i would buy so much more from the states if more usa companies offered free shipping to canada

Precisely, and they aren't, either. Nothing is "free", the cost of shipping is already covered in the selling price of the product, and LL Bean is far from a discount retailer.
At best it means that they are taking a little less profit on each individual sale, for the purpose of making up the difference in volume or, more expensive sales per shipment.

It's more likely that sales have been waning and they are using the difference of shipping cost to increase sales, while still charging full list price for their products.

LL Bean has some great products, but, the reality is, they aren't exactly what can be called "reasonably priced."

Kudos to them for finding a way to lower prices, with out changing the price of their products. Remember, "The more you buy the more you save" ;)

Frankie,

The sad fact is that it is still less expensive to buy in the states from LL Bean than it is for me to buy locally....at a lesser quality....even with the duty and stuff...

The second sad fact is that folks that do not live in the states are paying for your "shipping free to the lower 48" deal so we are almost paying for shipping twice...

I have worked this out....for some US companies, it is cheaper to ship to me than it is some of the states...

From a business point of view...it would be profitable for some of the companies ...I think jc whitney does this. (not that I would buy from them)...is to have a shipping address in Canada...

We may only be a small country but we buy lots..

The last time that I ordered something was from Mancini Racing 30 dollars for three books cheap then they e-mailed back the shipping charges of just under 60 dollars and I said no thanks. A few years ago I had a set of headers sent to me by USPS and that only cost 50 dollars. Now I understand both our postal systems are going down but this is crazy.

There's a great deal of difference for a business to ship to Canada, and to have a distribution there. Even if they did, it would only be a "break bulk" center. In other words, the company would still have the shipping costs to get to merchandise to the distribution center in Canada, and that product, would then be "inventory", instead of "sold product".
Presently the only merchandise that goes to Canada is "sold product".

These is also the questions of Owning or leasing a distribution building, transportation, maintenance on the building and property, employees, utilities, insurances, Canadian regulations, taxes, and on and on...

That doesn't seem like a winning situation for the company. I don't have an answer for your problem, but, the fact is, opening a DC in Canada would not be for the sake of your convenience, it would only happen if it would enhance the corporation's bottom line. For example, many companies look at doing that sort of thing, but, if P&L projections don't show them re-cooping the start up costs of such an operation in, say, 2 years, it won't happen.

btw, I don't shop at LL Bean, or Lands End. For what it's worth, they could move their entire operation to Canada, and give you the free shipping while charging the US a premium.
As for me, I can usually find the same quality merchandise, for less money at a local department store.

It would surprise (and flatter) me if any company moved to Canada just for the sake of my convince. :)

The business model would have to be there. ..however, if other American companies are doing it, than there must be a reason...or cannot they see past their noses..

However, none of this conversation talks to American companies being able to ship to me cheaper then parts of the lower 48....and I think you will find that many of us search hard in Canada before we look to the states..and with our declining dollar, that is going to be even truer..

The bottom line is that they do not see Canada as a valuable market.

Precisely. If the business was there, they'd be there, too. It's as simple as that.

Lands' End sucks! The majority of their clothes come from Guatemala and other sweat shop countries. I know this because my job there was to stock shelves with boxes to be picked to shipped out. Plus we found tons of dead spiders and a few snakes in the boxes too.

Did they charge extra for the meat?
