I took my car out Tuesday and ran around a little bit and on the way home I ran it a little hard. When I got to the stop sign it was running rough and it had a lifter tic. So I babyed it home and took off the pass valve cover and sure enough it had a loose rocker. So I adjust it and start it, and it still has a loud tic and idling very rough. Is that the sign of a collasped lifter? I never had one before. If I take them out how can you tell if it's collasped?
It's a 340 with magnum heads and Comp Cams lifters, so it doesn't have shafts. The oil pressure is good too. Bob

I think it could be one or more of 3 things. I'll start from easiest to fix to hardest.

1. as mentioned, bent push rod. problem is, why did it bend?

2. collapsed lifter, it happens from time to time

3. wiped cam lobe, the way to check it is to pull the lifter out and check the surface that contacts the cam. If it's chewed up or dented in, in the middle, you have wiped a cam. I hope this is not the problem.

Update.
I took it apart and the pushrods are not bent.
Pulled the lifters out and all looked brand new except no.4 intake had a small lobe mark about a 1/4 inch wide. It still has the radius on the bottom in all directions and you can't feel any wear on it. The cam lobe has minute wear, looks the same as the rest of them.
Could the mark on the lifter be caused the lifter not spining or if it collasped? The lifters are 2 years old and I heard stories of Comp using lifters made in China. Maybe there soft and prone to wear.
I noticed that when I pulled it apart that some lifters I could compress by hand, after it was run and they were still pumped up.

Question now is what to do about it. It's a brand new motor with 6 miles on it.
Clean and reuse the exsisting ones. Or buy some new ones.

I will try and setup a dial indicator and check the cam lobe with the other ones.

You might want to PM one of the engine builders on the board. BJR Racing or moper come to mind. They could tell you a lot more than me.

I did check the lobes on the cam and they were all the same, .522 lift, so the cam is not hurt. I think I'm going to replace the lifters just to be sure. Question now is which manufacture.

Thanks for your help Jack!

2 yrs. ago I had one of the Comp Cams with Chinese crap lifters. No lobes went flat and it sounds by your description it's just bad lifters like mine was. But they wouldn't hold their prime so basically they were junk. I took one apart and there was no trash in it but it sure was sloppy built. Replaced the lifters with a new set Comp sent me and they lasted about 600 miles then 1 then 2 then 3 started not pumping up very fast after setting over night (took nearly 5 minutes for them to quiet down). Pulled it out and put in a Lunati cam and lifter set and haven't had a problem since.

Thanks Fishy. I'm leaning toward the Crane Anti Pump Up's. I am not going to use COMP's lifters again.
