Finally we pulled the transmission pan.
Oh-Oh!
Lots of debris, look at pic.
When we got it for cheap, the tranny initially did not shift at all. After adjusting it ran as it should.. losing a lot of oil, but it did the job.
We decided to get the pan off, adjust the other band and proceed from there.
All magnetic debris and we stopped to get a beer.
Now, half drunk, let me ask for input. How do we proceed? Get another transmission? Quick fix? Just run it?

Have another beer. Never leave a job half done.
Tomorrow, start pricing rebuild kits and looking up videos- they're not bad to do, but the first time is always the hardest. You'll have to tear it down to find out what other parts may be needed in addition to the basic rebuild kit. If you need parts shipped from the US, the sooner you find out what they are the better off you'll be.
 
Fortunately those filters are very efficient, and prob kept the tiny chit outta the valve body.
They're easy to rebuild, if you are at all mechanically inclined, and drink beer.

Don't drink beer when disassembling the transmission. You'll have a hard time figuring how to get it back together.
 
Well, I guess there’s no escaping from a rebuild.
Early april me and my son will visit Houston and Dallas. We’ll take a rebuild kit back home and go from there
 
With that amount of debris on the filter, the converter will also be contaminated. AND not matter what anybody tells you, it would need to be taken apart and cleaned. I know your in the Netherlands, but consider getting a rebuilt converter at the same time.

Well, we got a few steps ahead.
Only a few miles from home we have a transmission specialist that only works for garagists. My son's former boss works over there. So we managed to become retailer-customer over there. My converter is now rebuilt. We picked an other transmission that had a couple of pan bolt-holes that were bad, but with all new parts in it. I got the holes done and with Carl H. Munroe at the workbench we did all the procedures and checks and we're now ready to install the transmission and converter next thursday. Tonight I'm going to flush the cooler and lines.
In my opinion I have a 40% chance on succes, haha.
If it's no succes I will kick out some all this stuff and replace the transmission with a professionally rebuilt one.

We'll be around from april 5th. We have a rental car from Thrifty, the first night we're in Galena Park, in some crappy cheap hotel. We might visit the Crosby car show, but I'm not sure if that's worth our time. On monday april 8 we're in Nasa space center looking at the solar eclipse. Some day that week we plan to go shooting at Top Gun in Hunters Creek Village. I hope to find a couple of LA, BB and/or RB engines to be shipped to Minnesota, and we head to Dallas the next couple of days, also visiting Nascar over there. Monday 15'th we head back overseas from Dallas Fort Worth.

I talked to my son and we decided to go over there. We're in a big jet lag that first day in USA, so we will be there in the morning. At 4 pm my eyes will close by themselves, can't help that! I'll send you a PM.
 
Yesterday evening the rebuilt 727 worked fine. Only transfluid seeping out between two pan bolts, with some gentle hammering we got it to stop leaking.

So, we made a looooong list with next things to do, our ever lasting project is on track again! Thanks for all the input.
 
awesome, rebuild the old one and keep it for a spare... they are VERY easy to rebuild.. There is a guy on youtube named Yoshi that has a whole step by step series doing one.

after giving up on my own rebuid, I bought a professionally rebuilt one. I messed up that one too...

I wanted to change the stock cooler line nipples for hose-nipples. Of course one of them broke off. The back one.
Well, I bored it out, paying special attention to keep little particles from falling in the casing.
At the last diameter I used, of course the very shap drill bit bit into the material and moved some 1,5"into the casing. It got out and I cleaned the 1/8 NPT threat with a new tap, vacuumed the daylight out of the channel and put everything together. I put the tranny back under the car and hoped for the best. As I messed with the return line to the transmission I guess any left particles will come into the pan and will stay there, or in the filter.
Special attention to the shift and kickdown adjustment, fluid level, we made a try. I successfully drove out, everything works. But, after a minute, everything is slipping. No forward or backward movement at all. My initial plan was to torch the s.o.b.
We pushed the car back in, restarted it and at first there was movement again! Which quickly ended again. Fluid level seems ok.

Well, before getting my *** kicked by the trans-shop, any guesses what can be the couse? Converter has been rebuild, was tested okay, has been used in another setup, can I have f**d that one up too?
 
Yeah I know. But this shop sells a lot of 727's and is in business for over 60 years.
And after all: I propably messed up myself.
I'll have my converter be checked at a specialist. And I'm gonne swap the transmission for another one at the shop. They will remove the line-nipples for me, I'm not going to break another one!
