OK I am an idiot,
It has been since High School since I put a mopar engine together, and I am having problems with the oil pan gasket. I think I know the problem, but not sure.
I followed the old SB Mopar rebuild book, and I think that is the problem. I did like they said and used RTV on both sides of the end gaskets and the cork ones. Well I go to tighten up the bolts and the gasket squeezes out. One big mess!! Am I correct to assume that you only use RTV in the corners, and the rubber ends?? Thanks for any advice!!!!!

I'm using rubber 4 piece gasket on my build and only planning to put a little dab of rtv in the corners, and 15 ft/lb torque max on pan bolts.

there is an order that the gaskets must overlap with the front and rear rubber seals. I do use sealant on ends. I do not use cork gaskets. You can buy a good rubber set from summit or jegs.. I use a light coat of sealant down the pan rails to hold gasket in place. Dont overtighten or the gasket will split at the holes.

Put the rubber ends on the pan dry.. Use copper coat adhesive and spray one side of the pan gasket and stick it to the pan. Install the pan no use of any RTV. The only time I use RTV is on a surface that is damaged to fill imperfections. I can drop my pan the gasket and ends come off with it in one piece. I have even rebolted the pan with the same gaskets without leaks

RTV is good to use in place of a gasket. But not really that great to use with them. Never use RTV with any rubber It causes the rubber to squeeze out. This is what i was taught and never had a problem. If you need RTV something is not mated correctly. The only time I ever used RTV was on intake ends when using W-5 intake spacers or if there is no room for the cork ends.

I have worked on cars that just had heads done. the rubber coated cam seals pushed out because they used RTV.

well how about some pics while I'm here. rust free 4spd shell with all rust free body parts sitting like this for over 15 yrs Available in Pa.

Thanks everyone!!

About what I thought. A combo of me actually reading a book, and mew being way to tired.

Were do you find the rubber gaskets??? I have been looking but did not see it on Summit.

Thanks everyone!

The most common mistake is not putting the time into preping a used pan for reinstall. If the pan is warped or if the bolt holes are dimpled inward toward the block, over tightening and/or leaks will happen.

FYI, This was on a 360 but I found a 1 piece gasket at NAPA(rubber)that was used on Jeep Grand Cherokee. I didn't check but I'm sure there will be a listing for a 318 pan.I know I'm gonna kill the spelling but "Gaskacinch" is a great adhisive that has been around forever. That I used to glue gasket to the pan per instructions on the can. Edelbrock sells this gasket sealer under their name too.I still used a bit of silicone at the 4 corners where the gasket meets the block side.

Well I stopped my an auto parts store and get a Fel Pro set and got it all together ok. Just put silicone in the corners. Slowly torqued it to 10ftlbs, then came back an hour or two later and torqued it to 15ftlbs. Looks good. Thanks to every one for all the help!!!!!

Did you drive-wind the heck out of the engine yet ?

Not in the car yet.
Weighting to get the heads back from the shop, and for the brother in-law to get the 904 built up.

And we know how long machine shops, and family can take! LOL

604 sorry for leading you wrong. I meant rtv on the ends as you did not the whole rubber piece. That could have been taken 2 ways.
