Have just installed a rebuilt 440 engine in a 1969 charger and cannot get the oil pump to prime itself. Have done a preprime on the oil pump but it still will not prime itself and pump oil.
Any ideas or thoughts.
Your quick response is appreciated.

Sometimes a new pump will not pick up even if primed with oil. Try taking the pump off the block and use a liberal amount of vasoline on the pump rotors. I should mention, though you'll hate me, are you sure that the gear and shaft are driving the pump when you're turning the engine over. Sometimes the drive gear comes loose from the pump shaft.

Take the pump off and pour at least a cup of oil in it. put it back on and prime it as soon as possible. That will take care of the problem. Bet you'll make sure there's oil in the pump next time.

Pull the distributor out and use the primer shaft supplied by MP. Or make one from an old intermediate shaft. Be SURE to have the drill rotating COUNTER clockwise or it will not prime. Oil pumps work only one way.
