oil pump and oil slinger question

I tore down an engine I aquired and took oil pump off. Is there supposed to be a gasket under the oil pump? This one didnt have one. My new oil pump came with one. second question. I have been told by some to discard the oil slinger behind the timing cover. Any thoughts? Im running a geardrive.

It wasn't long ago that I put my 318 together for the 66 and there is no gasket under the oil pump, and the oil slinger is there for a reason. Put it back in, it won't hurt anything being in there but it just might hurt or should I say LEAK if it is not in there.

I forgot to put the oil slinger on my engine and it does not leak. If I ever have the timing cover off I will put it back on.

why would they send a oil pump gasket with new pump?
