I haven't been to a dragstrip in well over 25 years. Now that I am retired, I want to get back in to it, strictly for fun with the grandkids. I have an A body with a 273 2bbl that I'd like to race at the local 1/8 mile track. I had the car weighed at 3080#. If I read the NHRA indexes correctly, they rate the engine at 160HP, not the rated 180HP. Assuming a driver weight of 200#, I get about a 20:1 weight to power ratio. My old chassis book says that it should turn about 9.85 inthe 1/8th. It doesn't show speed. My question, is what speed should I expect so I can calculate optimum axle ratio?

Thanks for the reply, Bob, but isn't the 15.94 a 1/4 mile time? This local track is a 1/8 mile.

Just recently got to the track myself for the first time in almost 20 yrs. You will love it. A 9.85 1/8 time should put you somewhere in the low 70's for MPH. If your 273 is stock and in good tune depending on tire size & axle ratio I think Mid 10's with mid 60's for MPH would be more realistic. Here is a web site with a good calculator. The multiplier or devider for 1/8 to 1/4 mile is 1.56. http://www.richmondgear.com/01calculators.html

Good luck & enjoy the track
