Ok. I took a chance with the wisdom of a Discount tire manager and ordered 245/60-15 Cooper rear tires, on wheel vintques oem ,15 inch, 8 wide, 4 1/2 backspace, 4 on 5 lugs. He thinks this will work on my stock 1970 Dart with nothing but superstock springs and air shocks which I don't need with the stiff, superstock springs. I'm returning to my Dog dish hubcaps and selling my Convo pro aluminum wheels
What's your opinions?
They will be here next week.

Not exactly the same but I put 15x7 4.25 backspace with 255 60's on the back of my 70 Swinger. The 7's are pretty tight at the fender lip and without rollING the lip, I wouldn'use a 8" wheel. I have stock springs with a extra leaf added so that helps.

The cooper will hook better than the BFG, so I believe you made a good move there, though it will be tight ay the fender lip.

be aware your dog dish will be real tight on the mounting lugs , Wheel Vintiques makes them that way to try to get you to buy their caps , I have a pair of the same rims on the back of my Barracuda but am running the Nitto NT555R 275/60/15 , a much better compound than the Cooper or BFG which are both crap if you make any real power and are actually a wet rated drag radial .

I had to use spacers to get decent clearance on the springs with that backspace but will soon be doing the offset hanger thing to correct that .

Actually, even though the 15x7 4.25" wheels are a +6 offset and the 15x8's 4.5" backspace wheels are a 0 offset, the difference in the tire width makes up the difference in offset. The outer edge of the 245's on the 15x8's the OP is talking about should be almost in the same place the 255's on your 15x7's. But, that's just on the math, which doesn't really account for how the sidewalls are squeezed on that narrower rim. That's just going on the section width specs for the tires.

It's going to be REALLY tight to the quarter. On my '71 Dart with an 8 3/4 and BBP axles I have 6" from the wheel mount to the springs (stock location) and 5" from the wheel mount to the uncut quarter lip. Zero offset makes it easy, the section width on a 245/60/15 is 9.6" wide according to the specs and that will stick out 4.8" from the wheel mount. On my car they'd rub, you need a minimum of about a 1/2" of clearance to allow for body roll and suspension movement. On a SBP axle/brake set up you should have an extra 5/16" on each side compared to a BBP axle/brake set up because of the narrower track on the SBP gear, which gives you almost exactly a 1/2" of clearance. But, if the axle isn't perfectly centered, and they usually aren't, they may rub on the side that's tighter. You'd have been better off with a 15x8" with a 5" backspace, if it was a little tight on the springs you could have used a small spacer. If it's tight on the quarter lips all you can do is cut or roll the quarter lips.

I think that was what I was saying!

But Wheel Vintiques doesn't make 5" backspace wheels unless you special order custom backspacing. Then if they don't fit, they are not returnable. I chose the 7's and they fit without issues or modifications. 1" extra doesn't make much difference in the look when that extra inch is on the inside. And yes, one side is tighter. I measured both sides before ordering the 7's.

not as wide a tire , but this was under my 69 dart gt with 15 x 8 rims i set up the rims myself , mine were very tight on the springs with about 1/2'' neg track .

Thanks for all the info. I've ordered them so to late now. If the wheels fit and the tires don't, Discount tire will order a different size tire for me. If the wheel is the problem, Summit will exchange them but i'll be out shipping. I'll post the results

where did you get the mini flaps? and do they make them for the 69 dart?

The 15x8, 4.5bs Wheel Vintique Rallys fit well on the '72 with 245 60s. I had to roll the lip on the fender side a bit. Spring side had plenty room.

i didn't roll the wheel opening lips on my dart , put a tall tire on it 225/70-15 on my home made 15x8 steels . and that raer end was sold awhile back . in process of building another a body 8 3/4 .
