I'm starting to hear rattling noises in 2nd and 3rd gears from my current A833. Worst case, I'll rebuild or replace. In the case of the latter, does anyone have experience with a later model A833 Overdrive-4 transmission (pros, cons, etc)? Curious about how the change in ratio for 3rd and 4th gears worked on a street cruiser, durability, etc. Any clarification would be appreciated.

The OD A833 runs the overdrive on what used to be 3rd gear and 3rd in the main drive where 4th was. This makes it weaker. Not a terrible thing.

The retainer up front is very large and finding the OE bellhousing is very difficult. Try Brewers for the bell housing.

The gear ratios within are spread apart pretty good. There is a big drop from 1st to 2nd. You'll have to rev first out a bit more than normal. Not really good for racing. It is livable for the street if your not to picky. The drop from 3rd to OD is a good bit. Again, not great for racing. But good for a longer leg for low rpm Hwy. driving.

Everything else is more or less a bolt in swap.

(Edited for spelling.)

Not fun to drive due to the horrible gear spacing compared to a regular close ratio 4spd. However the overdrive is wonderful if you do a lot of highway driving! The ODs tend to be noisier and wear out faster than the non OD units.

Thanks for the info, everybody.

The ***** about rebuilding the OD is you have drop the countershaft into the bottom of the case to remove the main shaft and reverse that procedure to put it back together. Takes a little practice to get it done.
