I have the pertronix ignitor III and the flame throw coil.... issue I have with mine is I can't feel when it hits the rev limiter...

is it suppose to feel like a "pop pop pop" like a msd unit or just stop revving any higher when it reaches the limit set at.
Thanks !
john

Good rev limiters retard timing and provide a lamp. Some cut off ignition, gas can build up in exhaust and ignite, with possible damage to muffler or exhaust.

Engine management systems (efi w/ignition) control fuel, they just wont go any higher, with a bit of a warble at limit.

Thanks for the info kitcarlson !

My pertronix unit does not have any sound differences , so I take it , it is just stopping the rpms from revving any higher..

can anyone out there can varify how there pertronix III works ?
Thanks !
John

Set it low, like 4k rpm if possible, and hit it. You'll know if/how it works without risking damage by over revving.

Ok ... I think I got this pertronix III figured out ............ I changed the limit from 5400 to 6000 rpms and took it out for a blast thru the gears .. Well... I could tell by the engine sound that the rpms were still climbing towards 6000 rpms from where I had it set at 5400 before .. So these units DO NOT pulse or pop pop pop. It just stops at where you have it set and does not rev any higher.
I even called the pertronix techs and they really did not know for sure what sounds or symptoms to look for when the limit was reached. go figure !
Ok ......... that is settled then !! now I feel better.
