I was just curious. I've been looking at the inventory of my 2 local pick-a-parts and have noticed there is generally a lot of 80's to 90's Durangos, Rams, and Dakotas. Would it be worth it spending the afternoon and picking up a 360 engine out of one of these for the $300 they list? I don't think the Dakota came with a 360 though. I haven't been to any of them, yet. It was just a thought.
 
The later magnum engines run really well, and in many cases will have very little bore wear...so if you can find one with relatively clean oil, I'd grab it.

I guess it all depends on what you're actually replacing. Even the 318 (5.2) magnum runs very well.
 
Also check your local craigslist and save yourself some labor. I have found many 340's pretty reasonable there. I would stay below 91 or 2 on the 360's which was before the magnum engines came out and some of them have the sought after 302 heads too
 
Go for it, most 2500 vans and trucks came with the 360's.
1500's are 90% 318
 
Just curious. I don't have the tools, know-how, or the man power to pull an engine, yet. Just thinking for the future. I'm going to head over to a local one that has a 75 Valiant and a 78 Cordoba. Going to see if they've got bbp spindles/hubs still on them. Let me know if anyone is interested in anything. I'll check my phone when I get there.
 
LA roller block is the one to have! Late 80s early 90s. If your not sure it has a roller, pull the intake.
 
half off weekends are a zoo. I would stick to a craigslist motor for $300 if at all possible. at least you can look the dude in the eye and get a feel for the motor. A pull out of a wreck (dont pull one out or a "driver" because it probably has motor or trans troubles) is a gamble. Sure you can pay another 30% for a warranty but that is ALOT of labor to find you have a cracked block or worse. And they charge a core and picker rental and you have to get teh beast in your vehicle after its paid for (they will hoist it into a truck or even in the back of a van with a forklift) so dont forget about that. I stood in line for 40 minutes to buy 2 wing window gaskets on half off day, what a waste! I saved 4 bucks.....but that was the only day I could go. Bring 2 friends, a rabbits foot and a truck, or dont bother, thats my advice.

whewwww ...before you said that i was going to say WHAT! an afternoon!!!.......should be an hour tops.

but sounds like you need to get some tools .....dang too bad i wasnt closer that would be easy in a pick apart yard bcoz they usually have the lift thingers on wheels and you can get them to bring out the forklift once its out.

i wouldn't waste time on exhaust bolts on a junkyard pull .......take a hack saw, slice the exhaust pipe about 5- 6 inches down from the flange. takes 5 minutes to saw through both pipes plus you get the flanges that way and take your own lift chain .....so they have something to grab with the forklift...makes it faster for them LOL

usually i spray paint a small piece of lift chain so they know its mine and wont try to rob it after they put the engine down in your truck.



yank that baby quick....if you push the forklift guy along after its out they usually get you loaded up faster in front of the slower ppl ....i do it all the time LOL
 
I spotted quite a few 318's in the vans today. I also saw 2 Ram 1500's. One had Magnum V8 callouts on the doors; however, I couldn't really see the side of the block to differentiate it from a 318 or 360. Not like I was going to buy one anyways...

That's good to note. Yeah, lack of tools is my downfall at the moment. I've got some miscellaneous tools at home but nothing special. I don't know too many people to teach me how to work on cars so I end up trying to figure it out on my own (something I've never been good at, always been an observer) and usually fail and get a little discouraged. It causes me to be a very slow and cautious worker because I don't have the confidence to work on what I'm doing. Finishing the brakes on my car is already worrying me a little. :wack:

well you have to start somewhere and we were all there. since i was 15 i grew up in a slavage yard/ farm setting so my adoptive family who owned the place always tossed me in the salvage yard action and showed me how to do stuff.

im only 4'10" and less than 100 lbs but they still gave me wrenches and told me to get in there and get it done. lol

if i can do it....i would bet you can tooo .....just do your homework and keeping dreaming of bas *** darts...chin up :toothy9:

I'm a dreamer all right... Not many people on here know (on moparts they do), but I'm studying to become a mechanical engineer and am currently a part of a club where we build and design a small offroading vehicle. The club is called SAE Mini-Baja. The past 2 months I went to Tennessee and Washington to compete. We got 11th in TN and 6th in WA out of about 88 teams each event. We're the top team in California. I designed the safety case and cooling system for our CVT and belt. That's why I haven't been able to touch my Dart in 6 months or so. So that's where I'm trying to get my experience with tools in. I guess I can share and make a thread about it in the general section.
 
they put carpet under the cars in union city pick n pull .makes it kinda nice.i usually dont bring a chain ,i take out a rear seatbelt and use that.(saw a lincoln town car picked up by the seatbelts once they are plenty strong) lol. if the trans is out already i will just let the engine roll back on the ground rather than rent theyre pos puller.and yes half price days are a zoo is an understatement,plus they dont put down new cars until after the sale day. bastards...:sad5::finga:
