I have read that the steering shaft needs to be changed to add power steering, as the manual shaft is too long. Is there any reason, you could not just cut the shaft to the correct length and and sleeve weld it back together?

Yes you can cut it and use a borgeson coupler no welding required.
The stock coupler is a different size between manual and power anyway.

Thumpower, please share the info if you do this, and use the borgeson coupler. I would like to install p/s also. Was also thinking of trying an electric steering assist under the dash, even though I already purchased the OEM hydraulic pump, steering shaft, and box.

A member here kursplat did the electric ps on his 68 Valiant.
