Need your help. I want to pull the 318 out of my 65 Valiant next month but would prefer to do it without removing the transmission. Any suggestions on how to support the front of the Transmission while it is out or is this just a plain bad idea?

I suspect it will be much easier to reconnect the transmission on the garage floor then while working under the car on jackstands ( did that once already)

Thoughts?? and thanks

Ken

Id use a jackstand under the case. If you leave the torque convertor in then change the front pump seal if you leave it to sit for awhile because it can pinch the seal and cause it to leak later on. Better safe than sorry

depending on what transmission you have use a ratchet strap hooked between the torsion bars and draw it up tight before you pull the engine, then its where you need it for putting it back together

X2 with the ratchet straps, you can also hook the straps to holes in the firewall. Did that with dads 273 and worked good.

X3 I just did this with my 67. I run a 727, so don't know if clearance is an issue, but I.................

removed the rear crossmember, lowered the rear of the engine, and removed all the 3/8 bolts from the transmission bell, leaving only the two 7/16 bottom bolts.

Then jack the rear back up and put the crossmember back in.

Stick a couple of 2x6's under the front pan area of the trans, and tighten a ratchet strap around. As you pull the engine, tighten it up to keep the trans up.

Don't forget to pull the converter bolts, and put a bent steel clip on the bottom of the bell to keep the converter from falling out.

On my 67, I didn't even remove the hood

Agree with the ratchet strap plan. Used to do that all the time! If you've got a manual it can be a real hassle lining up the input shaft in the tight early a-bodies but the strap works well. The auto tranny is a lot easier.

thanks for all the replies.. Yes it is an auto.. ratchet straps method seems to be a great way to go.
