question on #489 83/4 carrier

I have a bare 489 case with yoke and pinion , but it has no caps for the carrier , is it true you really got to have the original ones that came on it , reason is i traded some parts for other parts from a local guy , i have had this stuf so many years i was not aware the caps were not there , so he called me looking for them . I know you guys will have an answer, if another set can be used .He said it was junk throw it away.

I've swapped side to side and from one case to another all my life and never once had a problem. Never.

...........U can buy aftermarket caps from a few places, so i dont think it matters to terribly much...........kim.....
