ratchet shifter install?

I was wondering the proper way to install a ratchet shifter, trim out carpet around shifter? Install shifter over carpet? and is there an easier way other than using nuts and washers from underneath for quick shifter removal, And is it a good idea to use a rubber grommet to route the cable through the floor pan.

I installed my shifter first. Then cut hole in carpet and slipped it over the shifter. I welded bolts to the floorboard facing up so that the shifter unbolts by taking loose the nuts and washers. And yes, I ran the cable through a grommet where it passes through the floorboard.

I welded in "studs" (bolts from the underside) and used spacers/washers for leveling. Laid carpet over that and used a rubber grommet where the cable passes through the tunnel.

For an aftermarket shifter I'd mount it where it's comfortable for you.
