Well, this weekend I may finally get around to replacing the rear and side seals on my A833 transmission. This trans still has the Ball & Trunion joint, so I know its not as easy as just popping out the rear seal, tapping the new one in and be done with it.

I havent hit the book (TSM) yet as to what I need todo to even get the rear seal out. I assume I have to drop the trans and remove the transmission tail-shaft to be able to get the new seal in.

Anyone done this? How big of a job is it?

You don't have to remove the trans just to change the seal. Pull the driveshaft and the rear flange. Use a slide hammer/dent puller type tool to remove the seal. Tap in the new one and reinstall the flange and driveshaft. Top off the gear oil and you're done!
Thanks, Mark

As its not a slip-yoke, how do you release the flange without removing the tail-shaft?

I use an impact gun on the nut but you should be able to stick the trans in 4th and use a breaker bar and hammer to get it loose. You can't remove the extension housing without removing the flange first.

Thanks. thats good news that I can just pull the flange and not have to take the back part of the trans apart.
